In both these sports the goal were to get as objective judgements as
possible but in the efforts to get high objectivity, it seemed like a
negative effect on the validity of the sport often occurred. Objectivity
in the judgements demanded clearly defined rules but when the rules
got too specified there seemed to be a tendency that all performances
turned out very similar and the originality of the performances decreased.
Rule changes in sports are done from different reasons and as an
example concerning the above discussions the rules in acroski was
changed in the efforts for acroski to become an Olympic sport. It was
known that the International Olympic Committee, (I.O.C.) where
concerned about judging sports because of the risks for subjective
judging. As a consequence the rules in acroski was changed to make
the judgements as objective as possible. Maybe the reliability in the
sport was increased but it was felt it was done at the expense of the
validity in the judgements. The rules were changed to be very specified
and in every detail deciding the content of the acro skiers programs.
According to the interviews that resulted in stereotype performances
and the sport lost its basic idea when the originality and
freedom in the performances no longer was there. A citation from a
coach describes what many of the people in acroski were feeling:
... okay we never be objective but please let ballet skiing be ballet
skiing 17 ... (Johansson, 1998, p.45).
Since it was felt the new rules where not in accordance with the idea of
the sport, they after a while were changed again, this time back towards
being less specified and with a lower number of obligatory tricks in the
programs. This shows the reliability and validity interact with each
other, if the wrong things are measured or judged it doesn't matter if the
17 Ballet skiing was the name acro skiing had before it in 1996 changed to be acroski.
