and the most extreme points are also often cancelled. This will reduce
the risk a mistake from a judge or a conscious high or low point from
a judge gives too much impact on the scores, and add to a higher
reliability. The judge's points are based on rules, which are significant
in deciding the reliability of the judgements. High reliability is necessary
but not enough to secure that the measurements have high quality.
To reach a measurement or judgement with high quality not only
reliability but also the validity has to be high. Validity is concerned
with the question whether the right things are judged. Validity information
gives an indication of how well a test measures what it is
supposed to measure. There is also dependence between reliability and
validity.
In this licentiate dissertation the main purpose was to study measurements
and judgements in sport from a reliability and validity perspective
and the dissertation consists of two separate reports and one
summary report. In the two reports the two judging sports, the freestyle
ski discipline acroski and the gymnastic discipline rhythmic gymnastics
(RG), was studied and in the summary report the results from
those two reports are discussed together with measurement problems
in sports not measured only by judges evaluations.
In the acroski and RG reports the purpose was to understand what
people involved in the sports considered the “idea of the sport” and
how they felt about the rule system and judgments being done. Did
they feel the “right” and accurate things were being measured and
judged and how reliable where the judgements from their point of
view? The purpose was also to study the rule and judging systems and
the changes in those systems together with the reasons for those
changes. Were those changes done because of insufficient reliability in
the rule systems or because of insufficient validity or were there other
reasons for rule changes?
