following this conclusion, the ways the presence of the suffering child can have
an influence on teachers’ work today are discussed. Two aspects are distinguished.
First, the teacher can feel guilt, but also meaningfulness. Second, the
teacher can be made personally responsible but also be expected to forward the
problems of the pupils to experts.
The final chapter elaborates on three implicit themes in the thesis. First, the
relationship between discipline and care as two separate aspects of teachers´
work “today” and “yesterday” are analysed. Second, an analysis of the results is
made in terms of what they have to say about the institutional properties of
schooling. A rudimentary theory of schooling is developed. Third, the process of
change is described in terms of Mary Douglas concept “dirt”.
