following this conclusion, the ways the presence of the suffering child can have<br />

an influence on teachers’ work today are discussed. Two aspects are distinguished.<br />

First, the teacher can feel guilt, but also meaningfulness. Second, the<br />

teacher can be made personally responsible but also be expected to forward the<br />

problems of the pupils to experts.<br />

The final chapter elaborates on three implicit themes in the thesis. First, the<br />

relationship between discipline and care as two separate aspects of teachers´<br />

work “today” and “yesterday” are analysed. Second, an analysis of the results is<br />

made in terms of what they have to say about the institutional properties of<br />

schooling. A rudimentary theory of schooling is developed. Third, the process of<br />

change is described in terms of Mary Douglas concept “dirt”.<br />
