investigations (characterisation) of fly ashes, sediments and mixtures of binders and<br />

sediment. This capability assessment has been based on engineering, environmental,<br />

economic and market needs and acceptance. The project also presents results from<br />

laboratory tests on fresh and wet storage of fly ash as a binder component in a mixture<br />

with only construction cement (Fossenstrand 2009).<br />

Fly Ash as a Binder Component<br />

Selection of appropriate binders and binder amount is site-specific since sediment water<br />

ratio, mineral composition, grain size distribution of organic content and the contaminant<br />

content varies from place to place. Through a series of laboratory and pilot testing<br />

in the field a suitable binder composition and binder quantity is developed for each project<br />

based on functional requirements of the design. To demonstrate that performance<br />

requirements are met, the stabilised material's strength, permeability, etc. must reach<br />

predetermined levels. The required compressive strength is typically between 100 and<br />

300 kPa and permeability should normally be
