Abstract
The articles in this book deal with different aspects of bynames. They comprise both theoretical
discussions as to the delimitation, nature and terminology of such names, and more empirically
oriented case studies. The data for these studies represent a wide time span, from Viking Age runic
inscriptions to the language of children living in a modern-day Swedish suburb.
The nine papers published in the volume were originally presented at the Fortieth NORNA Symposium,
held in Älvkarleö, Sweden, 29 September–1 October 2010. The book also includes two
prepared reviews or oppositions presented at the symposium, as well as an introduction to a discussion
on ‘place bynames’ and a summing-up of the whole meeting. The authors are mainly name
scholars from Scandinavia, but two keynote speakers from Germany and South Africa were also
invited to the symposium and present their papers in this book.
