Some personal bynames in Sverri’s saga

The highly complex corpus of names to be found in Sverris saga, and the many variants
of several names, invite new tentative interpretations. Most of the nicknames are interpreted
in Lind (Bin.). Þorleifur Hauksson, in his edition of the saga, supports many of
Lind’s interpretations, and also often refers to Finnur Jónsson (1907). But he also offers
new, independent interpretations, most of which seem sound and well founded.
This paper is a continuation of one read at the 14th International Saga Conference in
Uppsala in August 2009 (the text is to be found at http://hig.diva-portal.org). The discussion
at the conference was an encouragement to look more closely at a smaller
selection of the data: names of the type referring to characteristics of various kinds. In
addition, the present paper discusses or reinterprets nicknames such as Ívarr Dapi,
Ívarr Silki, Áskell kussa, Óláfr Beitstokkr, Jón Trínn, Gudlaug gnitaskǫr and Óláfr
Smjǫrkollr. The discussion also raises questions of language history, such as how early
we can assume that a loanword from Low German was used as a nickname; and how far
we can allow ourselves to rely in our explanations on apparently similar words from
modern Norwegian, Icelandic and Faroese, if the words in question are not found in the
medieval sources.
