Pool Guide
ATTENTION JCC OF SYRACUSE MEMBERS:
Please remember to use your membership card to enter the building on Saturdays and access the pools. Don’t
have a membership card? Stop by the Fitness desk to get yours, call 315-445-2360 or email info@jccsyr.org.
Welcome JCC Members
Are you ready for the
2019 outdoor swimming
season? The JCC’s
outdoor heated pools are
a great gathering place for
members and their guests
to cool off, relax and
exercise.
Make the most of your membership by using the
pool to its fullest this summer. Come swim after
work, on weekends with family and friends or after
early morning workouts. Incorporating the pool
into your personal fitness training will add a new
dimension to your exercise routine.
Pool rules
1. Upon entering the pool area, all swimmers must
check in at the lifeguard desk.
2. No swimming without a lifeguard on duty
3. No glass containers of any kind are allowed in
the pool area (food, beverages, lotions, etc.).
4. No food or gum is allowed in the pool area at
anytime. Beverages are allowed and must be in a
can, plastic bottle or paper cup. Please help keep
the pool area clean and free of bugs by promptly
placing all garbage in trash receptacles.
5. No running, pushing or boisterous play.
6. No urination, defecation, spitting or nose blowing.
7. Persons with rashes, open sores, inflamed eyes
and/or communicable diseases are not allowed
in the pool. Remove all bandages before entering
the pool area.
8. Shower before and after using the pool.
9. Diving is permitted only in the designated area at
the deep end of the large pool.
10. The decision of the lifeguards in all matters
concerning the pool and the enforcement of
these rules is final.
Children and the pool
1. All children under age 15 must be supervised at
the pool by an adult, sibling or babysitter age 15
or older.
Like last year, we’re offering several aquatics
programs throughout the summer (details on the
pages that follow). They include learn-to-swim
group lessons, private and semi-private swimming
lessons, and children’s pool parties.
Because the JCC pool is a members-only benefit
(guests are welcome when accompanied by a
member, see below), please remember to bring
your membership card to the pool and check-in at
the lifeguard desk upon entering the pool area. If
you have any questions or comments regarding
the pool, please contact us at 315-445-2360.
Thank you for being a JCC of Syracuse member.
We hope to see you pool side!
2. Children who are unable to stand with their heads
completely above the water in the pool’s shallow
end must be accompanied in the water by a
supervising adult, sibling or babysitter age 15 or
older, unless they pass a test with the lifeguard.
The test consists of swimming two widths of the
pool and treading water for 30 seconds.
3. Swimming accessories such as inflatable toys,
kickboards, water noodles etc. may only be used
in either pool with permission from the lifeguard.
Permission may be denied if the pool is crowded
or if items are deemed potential safety hazards.
4. No child is allowed in the small pool unless
accompanied by an adult, sibling or babysitter
age 15 or older.
5. The small pool is intended for non-swimmers.
It is not to be used as a play area by those with
swimming ability. At the lifeguard’s discretion,
older children may be asked to leave the small
pool.
6. Children who are not toilet trained must wear
disposable diapers and plastic pants or special
swimming diapers while in the pool.
7. Lifeguards have the final authority regarding
safety issues in the pool and pool area.
Choose the path that brings honor
By Rabbi Andrew Pepperstone
Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas
During the summer months, between
Passover and Shavuot, there is a custom
to study a particular work of the Rabbinic
Sages called Pirkei Avot, which is filled
with ethical and moral teachings.
In the beginning of the second chapter
of Pirkei Avot, Rabbi Judah
the Prince asks a big question:
“What is the correct path that a
human being should choose?”
Of course, he is not asking
about how to get around in
the woods, trying to figure out
which path one should take to
get through them. Rabbi Judah
is asking the big question: What is the
right way for a human being to live their
life? At any given moment, how should we
choose what to do?
Rabbi Judah offers the following
answer: “That which brings honor (tiferet)
to one’s Maker, as well as honor (tiferet)
from humanity. And be as attentive with a
minor commandment as with a major one,
because you don’t know the reward for each.”
Rabbi Judah’s answer is fascinating,
combining a human-divine axis with
a human-human axis, and in essence
combining them together. For Rabbi Judah,
one cannot serve God without serving
humanity. Or, perhaps to put it another
way, one only serves God when one serves
humanity in a way that brings honor.
Over the generations, many other
rabbis have studied Rabbi Judah’s teaching
and have added their own insights to his
teaching. Rabbi Ovadia from
Bartenura (Spain) focuses on
the use of the word for honor,
which in Hebrew is tiferet.
Tiferet can mean honor, and
it also has roots in other areas
of Jewish thought. In Jewish
mystical teachings, God is
understood to have two main
aspects, chesed/lovingkindness and
gevurah/strength or discipline. Each
one alone is insufficient. Love without
discipline is chaos. Discipline without love
is cruel. The balance of these two qualities
is called Tiferet, a harmonious balance
between love and strength, between freeflowing
compassion and structure. Rabbi
Ovadia thinks that Rabbi Judah is calling
for people to find a middle path between
the extremes on either side.
Another sage, Rabbi Yonah comments
on Rabbi Judah’s focus on bringing honor
to humanity. For Rabbi Yonah, it is all
about doing the right thing for someone
at the right time, which creates honor,
beauty and balance. For example, if
someone is sick in the hospital, and has
made it clear that they do not want visitors,
that is their right. But if someone says,
“Well, I cannot visit them later on, so I
will go now, even though they don’t want
visitors.” That person has not brought the
recovering person honor. On the surface,
they have fulfilled the commandment to
visit the sick, but at the completely wrong
time. They made visiting the sick about
themselves, and not about the person who
is recovering.
This summer, when you have a choice
to make between two or more options, you
can ask yourself Rabbi Judah’s question:
Will this choice bring honor to my Maker
and to humanity? Is this a choice of an
extreme nature or is it along a balanced
middle path? Is this a choice I am making
for my interests alone or for the sake of
others as well? Every choice we make has a
consequence, even the smallest of choices
can have a large impact.
Adults and Seniors Program
Senior kosher dinners to start up again June 17
The JCC of Syracuse is a great place for
seniors to enjoy a hot, nutritious and wellbalanced
kosher meal on Monday evenings
all summer long.
The JCC’s Dr. Morton and Mrs.
Libby Maloff Summer Senior Dinner
program will kick off on June 17. The
weekly dinners will be held on Mondays
at 5 p.m. at the JCC of Syracuse on 5655
Thompson Rd. in DeWitt. A variety of live
entertainment will be included each week
as part of the dinner program. This JCC
summertime tradition will run through
Aug. 26.
The JCC’s summer dinners, open to
seniors age 60 and older, are offered for a
suggested contribution of $5 per person.
Registration is required the Wednesday
before each dinner by calling 315-445-
2360.
“We’re very excited to be starting up
our senior dinner program again this
summer,” said Marci Erlebacher, JCC
of Syracuse executive director. “This
wonderful gathering allows seniors to get
together and socialize over a delicious and
affordable kosher meal.”
The JCC’s weekly summer dinners are
an additional component to its successful
Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult Dining
Program. The dinner program was
renamed three years ago after the late
Dr. Morton and Mrs. Libby Maloff thanks
to a generous gift from their surviving
family members.
The weekday senior lunches at the JCC
will continue at noon Tuesdays through
Fridays during those weeks the summer
dinners are held. The lunch program
offers seniors age 60 and over a nutritious
and well-balanced kosher meal for a $4
suggested contribution.
The JCC Senior
Adult Dining Program
is the only senior
nutrition program
available outside of
New York City serving
kosher meals five days
per week. The program
is funded in part by
the Onondaga County
Department of Aging
and Youth and the New York State Office
for the Aging and Administration for
Community Living. For more information,
and to register for a lunch or dinner, call
315-445-2360.
Senior dinner volunteers needed
Volunteers are sought to help serve Monday evening senior
kosher dinners at the JCC starting on June 17. Volunteers
age 13 and older are welcome and should be available
starting at 4:45 p.m. Flexible weeks are available. Students
seeking to fulfill community service requirements will receive
confirmation of volunteer hours served.
community program, call 315-445-2360.
JCC Adult Coed Jewish Kickball League starts May 16
So, you’re all grown up but you still want
to play kids games? Well here’s your chance
to recapture a bit of your long-lost youth!
The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse will hold an Adult Coed
Jewish Kickball League on Thursdays from
6–8 p.m. starting May 16 on the JCC’s
baseball field.
It’s open to young adults ages 22 and
older and will consist of four teams with
a maximum of 12 players per team. The
games will be an hour long and each team
will play once every Thursday through
June 20. The cost is $20 per player and
includes a league jersey and two happy
hour events during the season.
“We are delighted to be starting this
kickball league,” said Marci Erlebacher,
JCC executive director. “It will be great to
get people outside enjoying some fresh air
and exercise after the long winter. We’re
looking forward to making this a fun,
competitive outlet for our community’s
younger adults.”
The kickball league
is part of Ha Liga, the
Young Adult Jewish
Sports League at the
JCC that was recently
started by volunteers
Brian Raphael and Adam
Goldberg. The kickball
league’s team captains are
Hannah Solomon, Seth
Goldberg, Jay Sinclair
and Brian Raphael.
“Ha Liga was designed
to give young Jews
in Central New York
an outlet for coming
together and making
connections through events and outings,”
said Raphael. “We’re really excited to
get the kickball league started and bring
people together socially for some fun
and excitement. If anyone is interested
in helping out with the league, we would
certainly welcome the assistance.”
Tzofim Friendship Caravan to perform free concert at the JCC July 31
The Tzofim Friendship Caravan will, once
again, be stopping in Central New York for
shows this summer to celebrate 100 years
of scouting with their theme “100 years of
connection.”
The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse will showcase the
Tzofim Friendship Caravan in a
free community-wide concert on
Wednesday, July 31 at 7 p.m.
The Caravan members will
spend their entire day at the
JCC. They will teach the JCC’s
day campers about Israel
through activities, games and
educational programming. And
Caravan members will perform
a private hour-long show for the
campers. Caravan members will
also interact with the seniors
during the JCC’s senior lunch
program where they will sing
songs for them.
The two other CNY
performances scheduled for the
Caravan are:
• Tuesday, July 30, 7 p.m.
Utica Jewish Community
Federation of the Mohawk
Valley
• Thursday, August 1, 7 p.m.
Binghamton Jewish
Community Center
All shows are free and open to the
public. There are three Caravans that
will crisscross America this summer and
all will be named after famous Israeli
musicians. The first Caravan came to the
United States in 1973. In 1985, the first
Caravan performed in Syracuse.
The Caravan aims high and wants to
work toward a better society so that there
is a strong connection between the people
Tzofim Friendship
Caravan
WHEN: Wednesday, July 31, 7 pm
WHERE: JCC of Syracuse
of Israel and America. Through song and
Seniors: Does your health insurance plan include a gym membership?
Each teen brings his or her life
experiences to this entertaining show.
Their stage show is filled with enthusiasm
that is palpable and contagious. The show
will take you on a voyage of sounds and
images that represent Israel’s people,
cultures, heritage and landmarks.
After the show, Caravan
members will mingle with the
audience to provide further
opportunities for face-to-face
interaction, exchange of ideas
and friendship. Organizers are
delighted to share this special
experience within the Central
New York region.
This year’s performances
are made possible with funds
provided by the State and Local
