In fall of 2006, University of Louisiana-Lafayette 

freshman Bernard (Bernie) Lemoine joined Theta 

Xi's Alpha Omicron Colony. Almost immediately the 

young Brother set his sights on re-chartering the 

chapter, and being elected chapter president. 

Brother Lemoine realized both goals in spring 2009 and 

in August of 2009, he was elected as one of two 

Undergraduate Directors to serve on the Grand Lodge. 

Earlier this year, we asked the new 2010 graduate to 

share with us reflections on his fraternity experiences. 

On what alumni generosity has meant . . . 

“If I could meet the men who give their time, their 

money... I honestly wouldn't be able to thank them 

enough. Every investment they made in Theta Xi 

helped me get a heck of a lot more out of college than I 

could've imagined. I never missed a District Leadership 

Academy. I attended the Presidents Academy... that 

experience was a highlight of my entire college career. 

I learned more in that one weekend than I did during 

some classes in a whole semester.” 

One of the most important moments came for 

me the first time I ever attended a Theta Xi 

meeting. I hadn’t joined yet, but I remember 

being so impressed to see the genuine respect among 

the Brothers for each others’ ideas. The amount of 

responsibility they exhibited really sparked my interest 

in joining.

every Brother a lot of 

opportunities to excel in 

his particular skills. 

At Presidents Academy, 

we all took an online 

assessment that tested 

putting our own leadership 

capabilities into action.

“I've invested a 

lot of time into 

Theta Xi, and I 

also feel it's invested a lot in me. We've both kind of 

built each other up, building my personal values and 

leadership abilities. The Fraternity also provided me 

incredible networking; I had two job offers at graduation, 

both of which were directly because of Theta Xi. 

Now, I just want to be there to help, to always have a 

hand in Theta Xi.” 

Alumni gifts make a real difference in the lives of our 

undergraduate brothers. This year presents us with a 

new generation of leaders seeking to improve their 

leadership skills and build a stronger Fraternity. The

lenge arose. We had to solve it based on constraints 

like budget, time, labor, etc. Then our performance 

was rated based on how real-life executives had 

answered these same questions. That was pretty cool. 

Without Theta Xi, I would’ve never learned the value 

of responsibility or the patience it takes to lead 

people. Last summer, one of our rush chairmen 

wanted to quit… I really took some time to think 

about how to talk to him and show him why it was 

important to get through things, to keep going. 

As an alumnus, I definitely want to stay active. A lot of 

alumni overlook how important their contributions 

are. The strongest chapters I see have a really 

involved alumni base. When the undergraduates 

know there are people who care about them, they try 

harder to not let them down. I think the accountability 

is much greater then. 

Ben Rowley served as president of Theta Xi’s Alpha 

Epsilon’s Chapter and graduated from the University of 

Nebraska, Lincoln in 2009.

WHAT’S GOING ON 

WITH THE FOUNDATION? 

In these days of instant communication, it seems 

odd that people often say, “I don't know what's 

going on!” 

Perhaps there is too much communication; maybe not enough time or 

inclination to keep abreast of all the information available to us from the 

web, emails, TV, magazines, newspapers and even periodic publications 

from affinity organizations to which we each belong… That includes Theta 

Xi. 

There is a lot going on in Theta Xi. And it's overwhelmingly positive and 

exciting. 

This FORUM issue debuts a new electronic magazine format to supplement 

the Fraternity's electronic issues of The UNICORN. Theta Xi Foundation will 

continue appearing in The UNICORN with regular news and updates. 

FORUM will provide the Foundation's Annual Report and feature 

Foundation supported activities and programs as well as provide important 

donor recognition. 

The Foundation's mission is to provide educational and leadership programs 

to support the undergraduate brothers of Theta Xi. I'm proud to report that 

our annual leadership programs continue to give our undergraduates 

outstanding opportunities to build their leadership skills and enhance their 

personal development through values based curriculums that promote 

Theta Xi's historic core principles and Statement of Purpose. 

Furthermore, our leadership programs - Presidents Academy, Rising Stars 

Academy and District Leadership Academies - draw more members every

recognized and presented 

with Theta Xi's Man of Distinction 

th 

Award at the 145 Anniversary 

Convention making him only the 

second brother to receive this 

honor. 

The Man of Distinction Award was 

created by the Theta Xi Foundation's 

Board of Trustees to honor 

Theta Xi members whose accomplishments 

outside the Fraternity 

are worthy of distinction. These 

accomplishments could be philanthropic, 

professional or personal, 

but must reflect the values that we 

strive to develop in Theta Xi men. 

Furthermore, the recipient must 

have exceptional achievements 

and contributions to society, 

reflecting positively on the Brotherhood 

of Theta Xi. The award, 

sponsored by Theta Xi Foundation, 

was presented for the first time in 

2003 to Cliff C. Cameron, Alpha 

Alpha 245, LSU '42. 

Brother Hirsch first distinguished 

himself as an undergraduate 

member of Alpha Beta Chapter. 

While at the University of Illinois 

from 1978-82, David organized the 

chapter's first Pole Sitting Event to 

benefit the National Multiple 

Sclerosis Society. Thus began a 

commitment of service to others 

that has become a focus of David's 

life and career.

David's service to Theta Xi nationally 

began in 1980 when he was 

elected to a two-year term as an 

undergraduate Director on the 

Grand Lodge. Upon his graduation, 

Brother Hirsch took a position 

in investment banking and in 

his spare time became active in 

the Alpha Beta Alumni Association 

as well as the emerging philanthropy 

Habitat for Humanity. 

After working his way up the 

ladder in the Chicago chapter of 

HFH, David was named a member 

of Habitat for Humanity's International 

Board of Advisors where he 

attended builds with former U.S. 

President Jimmy Carter. His 

experience with Habitat and the 

opportunity it provides volunteers

to raise funds and actually participate 

in building houses, led 

Brother Hirsch to spearhead the 

adoption of Habitat for Humanity 

as Theta Xi Fraternity's second 

National Service Project in 1993. 

During this time David also 

accepted a nomination and served 

as a Director on the Grand Lodge 

from 1988 to 1991. 

Throughout this time Brother 

Hirsch also distinguished himself 

as a stock broker in the greater 

Chicago-area business community. 

He served as a Director of 

Barrington, Illinois Area Community 

Foundation and in 1994 was 

named as one of Crain's Chicago 

Business “40 under 40”. In 1995, 

he was recognized as one of 

Registered Representative Magazine's 

“Outstanding Brokers”. 

In 1997 David founded the Illinois 

Fatherhood Initiative, whose 

mission is connecting children and 

fathers through responsible 

fathering. This organization 

reaches out to fathers, 

step-fathers, coaches and 

other father figures to 

encourage and support 

them to provide children 

the essential parental 

support they need. Started 

in Chicago, this outstanding 

organization has now gone 

nation-wide and David 

Hirsch was once again honored 

when named the Illinois Fatherhood 

Initiative “Father of the 

Year”. 

His community involvement 

continues to this day. David has 

served on the University of Illinois 

Foundation President's Council 

and the Chicago Police Memorial 

Foundation. Additional awards 

have included the John Stanford 

Education Heroes Award in 2000, 

the Illinois CPA Society “Distinguished 

Public Service Award” in 

Illinois Fatherhood Initiative 

Founded by Brother David Hirsch, AB 1078 

Illinois Fatherhood Initiative (IFI) was 

created in February 1997 to address 

the increasing problem of father 

absence in society. Research indicates 

that some 24,000,000 children - 1.1 million 

in Illinois alone - are growing up 

today in homes without their fathers. 

Children from fatherless homes are more 

likely to commit suicide, run away, have 

behavioral disorders, commit rape, drop 

out of high school, abuse chemical substances, 

end up in a state operated institution, 

and end up in prison. 


IFI is the country’s first state-wide nonprofit 

fatherhood organization whose 

mission is connecting children and 

fathers by promoting responsible fathering 

and helping equip men to become 

better fathers or father-figures. 

IFI was founded with the belief that every 

child deserves to grow up in a home with 

a loving, caring and involved father or 

father-figure. 

Through strategic alliances with private, 

non-profit, and governmental organizations 

IFI creates and strengthens existing

Kellogg Foundation National 

Fellow. 

Brother Hirsch is married to his 

wife, Peggy, and they are the 

proud parents of five children, 

Dave, Amanda, Emily, Charlie and 

Addie. 

One might call David Hirsch “a man 

for all seasons”. In fact, he is one 

of Theta Xi's brightest stars who 

we can all be very proud to call a 

brother in the Bonds!

BEN FRANKLIN, AMERICA'S FIRST PHILANTHROPIST, IS 

OUR ROLE MODEL FOR ONGOING FOUNDATION SUPPORT 

The Franklin Guild is Theta Xi Foundation's planned giving club named 

to honor the spirit and reputation of Benjamin Franklin, our patron 

saint and recognized as America's first true philanthropist. 

Bequests are a significant means of financial support for a charitable 

organization and the Theta Xi Foundation is no exception. By including 

Theta Xi Foundation in your will, you can ensure that you will always 

contribute to Theta Xi's commitment to provide values programming 

and educational opportunities to build the leaders of tomorrow. 

Bequests were received over the past two years from the estates of 

Richard Ruwe, Iota 502 (Washington U '52), and Carl Elling, Omega 237 

(Washington St '52), Malcolm Ferguson, Alpha Beta 277 (Illinois '32), 

and Milton Collick, Alpha Gamma 210 (IIT '33), These planned gifts 

have been placed in the Foundation's All True Men Endowment Fund 

and these investments will provide income to support leadership and 

educational initiatives for generations to come. 

As you create or revise your estate plans, take a moment to remember 

the many lessons you learned throughout your undergraduate and 

alumni experience. Please consider including the Theta Xi Foundation

strengthen the Theta Xi Foundation and its educational resources.

In 2005 Theta Xi adopted a Leadership Initiative to 

reconfirm the Fraternity's core values: leadership development, 

scholastic excellence, philanthropic service and 

accountability-based brotherhood. 

In the years since, the Brotherhood has enjoyed measurable 

gains in percent of student member participation in leadership 

training, chapter performance, membership growth, 

alumni volunteerism and financial support. 

MEASURABLE GAINS IN CORE PROGRAMS 

A Foundation/Fraternity collaborative, the Leadership 

Initiative is comprised of these core initiatives: Presidents 

and Rising Stars Academies, District Leadership Academy, 

Chapter Accreditation Program and the 

Program.

has increased steadily since the adoption of the Leadership

Leadership Initiative 

2005-2010 

JOURNEY OF 

ACHIEVEMENT 

A primary goal for the Rising Stars Academy is to help attendees 

employ new skills learned throughout the remainder of 

their undergraduate experience. We're demonstrating 

success in significant ways: 

18% of the attendees have gone on to become chapter 

presidents. 

More then 50% of attendees have gone on to assume 

other executive leadership roles in their chapters 

(treasurer, vice president, recruitment chairman, etc.) 

The re-designed District Leadership Academy (formerly 

Regional Conference), premiered in 2006 as a key component 

of the Leadership Initiative. The dramatic increase in 

attendance reflects high satisfaction and positive reviews 

attendees have taken back to their chapters. 

The current All True Men chapters (approximately 1 in 5 of all 

Theta Xi chapters) all exceeded Accreditation expectations, 

demonstrating success on an average 8.27 of 9 standards. All

True Men Chapter members enter into a contract with their 

alumni board and the Grand Lodge to excel to and beyond 

accreditation requirements and to emulate Theta Xi historic 

core values and principles. 

Chapter Accreditation Program 

Introduced in 2005, chapter accreditation has resulted in 

significant improvement in chapter performance across the 

Fraternity, a reflection of undergraduates implementing 

successful strategies learned during various Leadership 

Initiative programs: (See Figure 1.3)

within Theta Xi chapters. Between 2008 and 2010, initiations 

increased 6% compared with the previous two-year 

period. The time-tested theory holds true once again: better 

leaders build stronger chapters that recruit more members.

The Leadership Initiative has also resulted in new financial 


resources for the Foundation and educational programming. 

As the initiative has generated positive publicity within the 

Fraternity, the number of Academy Benefactors is steadily 

increasing. 

The Foundation's first ever Endowment Campaign is poised 

to raise $750,000 for the enhancement of leadership and 

educational initiatives benefiting hundreds of undergraduate 

brothers yearly. Over $450,000 has already been 

pledged. The Board of Trustees is working to meet goals of 

the Campaign for All True Men before the 2011 convention. 

A vital component of the Campaign's 

success will come with 

increased alumni Fund Drive support throughout this 

exciting era in Theta Xi's history. 

Elder Brothers Step Forward as Leaders and Mentors 

Since 2005, Theta Xi has seen an estimated 22% increase in 

the number of alumni involved in leadership roles across the 

Fraternity. These men are engaged as Academy facilitators, 

house corporation volunteers, mentors, and Leadership 

Coaches for All True Men chapters. These volunteers, and 

alumni donors to the Fund Drive, are the true heroes who 

continue to make Theta Xi relevant to this generation of 

undergraduate brothers.
