Istoria dezvoltăriiinfrastructurii de cercetareLa venirea mea în catedra Organe de maşini a InstitutuluiPolitehnic (1964) exista o dotare minimală formată dintrunstand de lagăre radiale cu alunecare, o maşină cu patrubile pentru studiul lubrifianţilor şi echipamente clasice pentrumăsurarea presiunilor şi temperaturilor. Încetul cu încetul,printr-o finanţare redusă, prin acte de bunăvoinţă aleunor colaboratori şi multă tenacitate, dotările au sporit, darn-au atins necesarul. Prin mutarea catedrei în noul local alPolitehnicii din Bucureşti în 1972, prin contracte, cu ajutorulunor institute departamentale, ca ICPMUA şi ICTCM,dotarea s-a îmbunătăţit, dar continua să rămână în urmă faţăde necesităţi. Totuşi în perioada 1978-1987 şase colegi aususţinut teze de doctorat cu subiecte din Lubrificaţie, de calitate,care au avut şi părţi experimentale consistente. Acelaşilucru a continuat şi în primii ani de după 1990, cândresursele financiare au permis doar dotarea cu câteva calculatoarepersonale.O schimbare substanţială s-a produs prin granturile dedotare finanţate prin împrumutul de la Banca Mondială: Cod74 cu CNFIS al Facultăţii de Inginerie Mecanică în 1998 şiD-118 al CNCSIS în 2000, referitor la "Protezarea articulaţiilorumane", la care am fost director. Cu acest prilej s-auachiziţionat două tribometre, PLINT-TE 66-Microscaleabrasion tester şi CSM-CALOWEAR- Spherical tester, unprofilometru Mitutoyo, un microscop şi un aparat fotoNIKON. În catedră s-a creat o reţea de aproximativ 30 decalculatoare. În 2005 printr-un grant INFOSOC, directorAl.V. Rădulescu, s-a achiziţionat un vîscozimetru rotativCAP2000+ Brookfield. Recent, prin cofinanţare (Platformade cercetare şi formare interdiciplinară INTEGRING şiGrant PNCDI-II 71-081, director A. Predescu) s-a achi zi -ţionat un tribometru universal de ultimul tip CETR UMT-2.Acest stand este utilizat pentru studiul lubrificaţieisuprafeţelor texturate. Prin grantul CNCSIS tip Idei ID-912s-au achiziţionat un aparat foto CASIO pentru filmarefotografiererapidă (1200 fps), un set de filme piezosensibileFuji şi un stand de încercări prin şoc.Este de menţionat că o parte din doctoranzii catedrei,cuprinşi în colaborări externe, sau prin burse doctorale, aubeneficiat de infrastructura de cercetare a universităţilorpartenere precum: T. Cicone, C.V. Suciu, Al.V. Rădulescuşi B.R. Kucinschi, la Universitatea din Poitiers respectivV.G. Marian la Universitatea din Kassel.The Development of theResearch InfrastructureWhen I joined the Machine Elements Department of thePolytechnic Institute, in1964, I found a poor research infrastructurewhich included a journal bearing test rig, a fourball machine for the study of the lubricants and standard devicesused to measure pressure and temperature. Step bystep, despite the under-financing, by means of our collaboratorsgoodwill and tenacious work of my colleagues andstudents, the research infrastructure had been improved, butstill did not meet all needs. After <strong>mov</strong>ing the Department tothe new location of the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest(1972), using funds from industrial contracts as well as thesupport of some national research institutes (such as ICP-MUA and ICTCM), the research facilities have been thoroughlydeveloped, but continued to remain under the desiredlevel. Despite these difficulties, during 1978-1987 six of mycolleagues defended their doctoral thesis in the field of Lubrication,having a high quality and consistent experimentalwork. The under-financing of the research was morenoticeable during the first years after 1990, when the fundspermitted only to procure several personal computers.A remarkable change was done due to the grants for researchinfrastructure development supported by World Bankloans: CNFIS 74 of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineeringin (1998-2001) and CNCSIS D-118 (2000-2002) referringto the “Human joint prosthesis”. For the latter I was the director.Using these funding sources, several important researchdevices have been procured: two tribometers(PLINT-TE-66-Microscale abrasion tester and CSM-CALOWEAR-Spherical tester), a Mitutoyo profilometer, amicroscope and a NIKON camera. A network of approximately30 computers was also set up in our Department.Later, in 2005, a rotating viscometer CAP2000+ Brookfieldwas purchased (funded by an INFOSOC grant, director Al.V.Radulescu).In 2008, the Laboratory was outfitted with themost important equipment, a last generation universal tribometer(CETR UMT-2) co-funded by interdisciplinary researchand training platform INTEGRING and PNCD-IIgrant 71-081 (director A. Predescu). This test rig is used forthe study of lubrication with textured surfaces. Recently, animpact test rig, a pressure sensitive FUJI film set and a highspeed shooting and <strong>mov</strong>ie recording (up to 1200fps) CASIOdigital camera have been procured with the funds of CNC-SIS-ID-912 grant.It is to be mentioned that some of my PhD students,granted with scholarships abroad and involved in collaborativeresearch programs, used the research infrastructureof the partner Universities: T. Cicone,C.V. Suciu, Al.V. Rădulescu and B.R. Kucinschi, atthe University of Poitiers and V.G. Marian at the Universityof Kassel.Human ResourcesDuring 1966-1990 several colleagues from theMachine Elements Department activated in the LubricationGroup: I. Voica, M.A. Dumbravă, D.M.Lazăr, St. Stanciu, S. Ivancenco and Z. Morariu.
