Reacfliile pe care le-am primit în legæturæ cu acest proiect au fost diverse. În timpul
proiectului øi dupæ încheierea lui, noi øi colaboratorii noøtri am încercat sæ ræspundem
adeseori la întrebæri venite din partea publicului, a mass-mediei, din partea unor
colegi din lumea artisticæ, din partea cunoscuflilor etc., întrebæri care puneau în discuflie
necesitatea unui asemenea proiect øi legitimitatea subiectelor abordate. În contextul
în care atît de des, în majoritatea discursurilor mainstream, se pune un semn
de egalitate între capitalism øi democraflie, între valorile creøtine øi binele absolut,
este normal sæ fie nevoie de mai multe explicaflii în cazul unui discurs anticapitalist,
chestionînd „valorile“ conservatoare considerate, cel mai adesea, ca fiind în firea
lucrurilor. Aøa cæ am luat aceste întrebæri ca puncte de plecare pentru o discuflie importantæ
øi necesaræ.
Pe de altæ parte, au existat, de asemenea, reacfliile pozitive (din nou din partea publicului,
a mass-mediei, din partea unor colegi din lumea artisticæ, din partea cunoscuflilor
etc.). Au existat reacfliile celor care au væzut spafliul ca pe un loc în care, chiar
dacæ temporar øi simbolic, se produce o rupturæ în ordinea prestabilitæ. A fost foarte
încurajator pentru noi sæ vorbim cu oameni venifli în spafliu ca sæ participe la evenimente,
sæ consulte arhiva sau doar ca sæ stea de vorbæ øi care ne spuneau cît de
necesaræ li se pare existenfla unor platforme (fizice sau nu) unde sæ se discute despre
faptul cæ realitatea zilelor noastre, bazatæ pe o ideologie a profitului, nu e de neevitat
øi cæ existæ alternative.
¬ În aprilie 2008, afli revenit la Bucureøti pentru a lua parte la cîteva dintre acfliunile
împotriva summitului NATO. Putefli descrie, pe scurt, atmosfera generalæ a acestor întîlniri,
în contextul de securitate exageratæ øi exces de zel din partea autoritæflilor române?
V-afli reîntîlnit atunci cu o parte dintre participanflii la Project Space?
√ Încæ din data de 24 martie, desfæøurarea oricæror acfliuni de protest în spafliul
public a fost interzisæ cu desævîrøire. În condifliile acestea, activiøti români øi din alte
flæri au închiriat un spafliu unde urmau sæ se organizeze, pe parcursul unei sæptæmîni
(28 martie – 5 aprilie), diferite workshopuri, proiecflii de film, prezentæri etc., ca o
formæ de protest paønic faflæ de politicile promovate de NATO.
Noi am ajuns la Bucureøti pe 1 aprilie, cu o zi înainte de începerea summitului NATO.
Øtiam cæ poliflia øi SRI-ul monitorizau atent activitatea militanflilor anti-NATO øi cæ
puteai fi reflinut pe stradæ færæ niciun motiv, dar nu ne-am imaginat violenfla cu care
autoritæflile au înfleles sæ interzicæ orice formæ de protest. Ce e mai trist e cæ massmedia,
prin articolele sau reportajele transmise cu sæptæmîni înainte ca summitul
sæ înceapæ, a fæcut ca aceastæ represiune din partea autoritæflilor sæ paræ o mæsuræ
de securitate normalæ. De pe 1, cînd am ajuns în Bucureøti, øi pînæ pe 5 aprilie, cînd
am plecat spre Timiøoara, am avut sentimentul cæ træim într-o lume paralelæ, în care
drepturile tale de cetæflean au fost anulate øi cæ orice abuz din partea autoritæflilor
este posibil. O lume care amintea foarte mult de perioada totalitaræ din timpul comunismului,
pe a cærei criticæ se ridicæ „democraflia“ de astæzi. Oameni care te urmæreau
pe stradæ într-un mod mai discret sau uneori ostentativ øi intimidant, telefoane
supravegheate, „activiøti“ curioøi si volubili care aveau întotdeauna în mînæ un telefon
gata sæ înregistreze ceva „incriminator“, øi sentimentul cæ nu øtii în cine sæ ai încredere
øi în cine nu – acestea au fost constantele întregii perioade din timpul
summitului.
Decizia noastræ de a merge la Bucureøti, tocmai atunci cînd autoritæflile sfætuiau cetæflenii
Bucureøtiului sæ pæræseascæ oraøul, a fost strîns legatæ de faptul cæ pe o parte dintre
activiøtii implicafli în organizarea acestei „sæptæmîni anti-NATO“ îi cunoscuseræm
pe parcursul desfæøurærii Project Space, fapt care ne-a ajutat sæ observæm imediat
contrastul extrem de mare dintre felul în care mass-media a construit imaginea militanflilor
anti-NATO øi ceea ce øtiam noi din discufliile directe cu ei øi din felul în care
i-am væzut implicafli în rezolvarea diferitelor probleme sociale. Un sprijin important
visible the means used by the dominant ideologies to shape our
reality, the ways in which these ideologies manifest their influence
in different spheres (education, mass media, culture, public space,
institutions, etc.) and implicitly the ways they infiltrate into our lives
trying to appropriate them. We thought this space as a demonstration
that there are alternatives.
The reactions received about this project were diverse. During the
project and after its completion we and our collaborators tried to
answer questions raised by the public, by the media, by colleagues
from the art world, by people we knew, etc, questions regarding
the necessity of such a project and the legitimacy of the topics
approached. In a context where so often most of the mainstream
discourses equal capitalism with democracy and Christian values
with the ultimate good, it’s normal that more explanations are needed
when one has an anti-capitalist discourse and when one challenges
the conservative “values“ mostly seen as something natural.
So we saw these questions as starting points for an important and
necessary discussion.
On the other hand, there were also positive reactions (again from the
public, the media, colleague from the art world, people we knew,
etc.). There were reactions from those who have seen this space as
a place where, even though temporarily, a break in the pre-established
order occurs. It was very encouraging for us to talk to people
who entered the space to attend events, to browse through the
archive or just to talk and who told us how necessary the existence of
such a space (physical or not) seems, where one could talk about the
fact that the reality we live in, based on an ideology of profit, is not
unavoidable and that there are alternatives.
¬ In April 2008 you returned to Bucharest to take part to some of
the actions against the NATO summit. Can you give us a brief account
of the overall climate of these meetings in the context of an exaggerated
security and overzealousness on the part of the Romanian
authorities? Have you met again some of the Project Space participants?
√ Even since the 24th of March all protest actions have been completely
banned within he public space. Given the circumstances,
activists from Romania and other states have rented a space where,
for a week (28 March – 5 April), they planned to organize different
workshops, film projections, presentations, etc, as a form of peaceful
protest against the policies used by NATO.
We reached Bucharest on the 1st of April, one day before the NATO
summit begun. We were aware that the police and the Romanian
Secret Service were closely watching the activity of the anti-NATO
militants and that one could be taken in custody from the street with
no reason, but we couldn’t have imagined the violence that the
authorities would use in order to ban any form of protest. The saddest
part is the fact that the media, in articles and reports broadcasted
weeks before the summit started, have made this oppressive action
of the authorities look like a normal security measure. From the 1st,
when we reached Bucharest, and until the 5th, when we left for
Timiøoara, we felt like living in a parallel world, where citizen rights
are being suspended and any abuse from the authorities is possible.
A world reminding largely of the totalitarian times during communism,
on the critique of which today’s democracy rises. There were
people following you on the street, discretely or sometimes in an
ostensive and deterrent manner, phones being watched, curious
and voluble “activists“ always carrying a mobile phone and ready
to record something “incriminatory“ and the feeling that you don’t
know whom to trust anymore – these were the constants for the
whole period spent during the summit.
Out decision to go to Bucharest, exactly when the authorities advised
the citizens of Bucharest to leave the city, was closely related to the
fact that we had met a part of the activists involved in organizing
this “anti-NATO week“ during the Project Space, which helped us
detect immediately the huge contrast between the way media has
built the image of the anti-NATO militants and what we knew from
