Package holiday. I have nothing against people who’ll go on package holidays. Some people want to sun bathe
through their whole holiday with a drink in one hand a kid in the other. Groups. Pretend communities and tourist
ghettos. Some call it recreation.
I want more. Something else. Somewhere else. Something that develops and absorbs me. Meet people who move me.
More. That will change me and give me different experiences. Poverty. Travel for someone else’s sake. To distance the
ego. As a volunteer.
Experience something real and genuine. For real. Handmade from Taiwan. Unexploited hamlets. Local guides.
Everyday life. Integration works best during the holiday. See the world as a big museum. Choose the ethnological
showcase and look from the outside and in and tell that; in Indonesian hamlets the tourist guides dissuades the
villager to renovate their stamped earth floor. Because stamped earth floor sell – and a new concrete doesn’t.
Alternative facades work best. Keep the poor poor. Empathy and sympathy. I am rich and privileged. To be first in the
uncivilized. Exoticism. Trophy hunting. Like Disneyland but for real.
