dacæ-i conservæm cuvîntului sensul complet, care include percepflia: arhitecturæ,
Reforma
budistæ are de-a face într-un mod adînc cu asta (pînæ într-acolo încît
sa øi consumul ei, cæreia, cum actorul „devine“ personaj, i te supui; la conflictul
My contributions to the aesthetics (1979–1999) have become rare, if I don’t
count some almost private interventions (texts for artist friends). The passing
of time and the state of art are to be blamed for this. The two are hardly separable.
The research which, for twenty years, made me want to peel the rite among
the producers of those commodities called aesthetic now seems to me out of
place, just like watching Jeff Koons’s work in order to appreciate Bernini’s sculpture.
I’d rather dedicate some straight reflections to the rite (Ombre, Milan,
2005; Natura del rito, Naples, 2006), revisiting the works of the great specialists
of the Greek-Latin antiquity and the commentators, especially the heterodox
ones, of the Semitic traditions. India continues to be unaccounted for (if such
a variety of culture allows for a grouping under the same category), of which
I remain cautious while my bookish excursions to the Far East, as a professional
amateur, are increasing. I also continue to be cautions because of these forms
of “diffuse religiousness” (Simone Weil) which the West has been ascribing to it
as spiritualities. The fascination for Asia has replaced the former Japonism with
salvific spiritualisms rather histrionic than renouncing: post-Schopenhauerian.
I prefer China and Japan from reasons which are probably and essentially aesthetic,
if we preserve the complete meaning of the word which includes perception:
architecture, handicraft, art of the gardening, all of them indebted, to
different degrees, to a never overlooked proximity with the tool (and including
here all the forms occurred from their racing modernization: but modernization
is not a qualifier good enough to define the process in progress since the end of
the Vietnam War). I’ve learnt a lot, tardily, from the works of Taut, the discoverer,
in the ’30s, of the Katsura palace – a Nippon equivalent of the Mesoamerican
sources of inspiration for F. L. Wright, Gropius, [Le] Corbu[sier] & al. –, of Luis
Barragán (with color as an architectural element) and Louis Kahn (both paying
attention to India and especially to the Roman architecture). India makes me
think of a perpetual, unsaturated endeavor against horror vacui. A universe of
the fullness, of the curve, of the sphere – a permanent pregnancy – rather than
of plenitude. The Buddhist reform has to do with this in a profound way (to the
point of dropping the topic of reproduction, sexuality and conception). I am on
an all too classic drift: I return (regress) to the Ancient. And especially I seem to
have a better view on certain aspects of the South Seas cultures, the ones who
turned me into an ethnologist. They talk about using imago, its creation and
consume, whom, as the actor is becoming a “character”, you obey; about the
incurable conflict between the thing and the category, a sort of split, dual, nondialectical
logos, but for that not lacking ambition, from which the archaic abundance
of effigies and the liturgism probably occur.
“The critical discourse” via arts is either a politically tainted artifice, stupid but
efficient, one has to acknowledge – “art is propaganda” (cf. see my series of conferences
with this title held in 1996 at the Moscow and Saint Petersburg universities)
– or a cheap rhetoric, supported by the satisfied ignorance of the
“consumers”, and, at best, of the flâneurs, and of the permanent mobilization
through culture, recently imposed by the political-economical power since, lack-
