altele.
astfel loc unei muzeofilii debile.
Or, istoria artei nu e doar o problemæ
vremuri.
The great difference between yesterday and today exhibitions consists in the
fact that the former were carrying out a pedagogical project, while the latter
only offer the opportunity to state again the same commentaries on the same
works, thus making way for a weak museophilia. At the same time, what is most
crudely missing is the placing into perspective. Or art history is not only a question
of art, but also a history one. Certain determinations do not belong exclusively
to forms extracted from an art history unrelated to the world, but exactly
to their social history. This second order is not, generally speaking, being talked
about today.
By social history I mean everything that can’t be reduced to the illustration of
this or that document, the montage of this or that author or mixing different
authors and periods. All these are of course interesting as a phenomenon, like
the Show Cases and Passages, but are related to an editing montage aesthetics
of which Eisenstein theorized and employed in cinema. The editing (montage),
as aesthetics and eidos, apparently left its mark over the century (even deconstructionism
is an example): collages, papiers-collés, combines, a literary way
increasingly citational, when it is not a soap-opera in prose, this a-dialectic
thinking, spread all over, acting through the accumulation of disparate fragments,
like the pages of an illustrated magazine, which indulges in passing from
this to that, without any other synthesis except for accumulation and forgetting
(turning the page, changing the hall, the framing, and so on). The result is
a colossal crumbling of what is called profundity, effort of thinking, patience
of the concept, so eloquently illustrated by the enormous conformism of these
times. Museophilia certainly has its contribution here.
In the ’70s, the museum trend has acquired new dimensions, commanded by
the strengthening of the relationship between the mass-museum and the cultural
industry. The subsequent museal proliferation and the activities making the
museum a kind of imperative necessity of any “cultural policies” has more to do
with the spreading pseudo-needs less and less aesthetical. This proliferation has
nothing, or very little, to do with the aesthetic creation, but corresponds to the
general organization of production and consumption of objects converted into
an expanding territory of commodity. In this respect, the reaction of French
or Spanish officials (and others) during a conference on national museums policy
in Madrid some years ago comes to my mind. Evoking the amazing multiplication
of museums in France at that time, I wondered about the meaning that such
inflation could have. The reaction was immediate and sharp. I was reproached
somehow that I was not worthy of a French citizenship. In the eyes of this clerk
(at that time Directeur des Musées Nationaux de France) I was obviously just a
retrograde inopportune philistine.
In order to understand the meaning of this international proliferation of the
museum it is indispensable to associate it with the phenomenon of generalized
aestheticization previously mentioned engaging every functional object in the
drift towards a universe of objects susceptible of acquiring an exhibitional value
through the simple fact of their presence in an exhibition space. The inconvenient
is that the aesthetic value and the exhibitional value don’t necessarily overlap
anymore. Outside the museum one can easily perform the split between the
objects with a high usage value and a low exhibitional value and, on the contrary,
between those with a high exhibitional value and a low usage value. In the
museum, this cleavage tends to disappear, because this very tendency of ascribing
an exhibitional value to no matter what object. Therefore, the properties
of the aesthetic object don’t cover anymore the old criteria: achievement, finiteness,
harmony. Unfinished, superfluous, ephemeral, are now aesthetical attrib-
