Despre arta contemporanæ.
O discuflie actualizatæ
Remo Guidieri
riturilor, a cæror experienflæ speram s-o pot face pentru a-i încerca restituirea.
ON CONTEMPORARY ART: AN UPDATED DISCUSSION
Remo Guidieri
Question ¬ In your books, anthropology and aesthetics keep occurring. How did
you shift from anthropology to aesthetics and how these two fields are related?
Answer √ In the 70s, semioticism (sémiologisme) and structuralism invading
over almost everything, the interest in anthropology was split, mostly naive
between the two and, naively as well, was depending on a tiermondisme (a leftist
empathy towards the Third World’s emancipation), genuine or merely “affective”
during a such a “de-colonization” period.
Perhaps it was a manner to lengthen a kind of innocence and embellish one’s
image. Anthropology made-up, with little expenses, a pose (not a real commitment)
of militancy to boost up one’s taste for exoticism, avoiding the confrontation
with a belated price due to the times and promoting alibis, which was
at that time an encompassing scientism, which Lévi-Strauss in an interview thirty
years later (1994) executed by stating that “human sciences are not sciences,
but at most and for the best elegant pretenses”. Still today such scientism,
ambiguously employed, survives as a screen masking conformity and void.
But at that time the engagement was “scientific”; let’s say a good cover for the
make-believe’s aria “I know, of course, but nevertheless...” (“je sais bien mais
quand même…”) in favour of this proclamed positivism.
In spite of some difficulties I did it myself, too. It was my “moderate” epoch.
I felt concerned for the cultural difference and its paradoxes and enigmas challenging
the mind. At that time, to keep away from the noblest “human science”,
anthropology, meant to fail to acknowledge the late-modern world, our worldin-progress.
Like other young people, I committed myself especially to the study
of ritual. I expected to be able to scrutinize such experiences and to attempt
some restitutions, to grasp the ties between things into a given context related
to some trivial – but apparently uncommons to us – conditions and
manifestations. What is the difference, for instance, between seeing a familiar
animal captured and sacrificed, then the same as being “adorned” or
“represented” by an effigy? More crudely: what is the difference between saying
and showing, describing and setting up a scene, expressing through words and
exhibiting things? Are the tacit language aspects equals to rough, silent, things?
Are there two thetics or just one common Urgrund named Mind?
