miøcare imobilul, eterna sferæ a iluzoriei lumi mitice a conøtiinflei, atunci
Trezire
Dacæ, aøa cum spune Boris Buden, noi sîntem, astæzi, incapabili sæ mai
træim experienfla timpului prezent drept experienfla unei crize, motivul acestei
De-a lungul acestui text am
Publicul a trebuit sæ înconjoare clædirea pavilionului
himself to the extensive project of mobilizing the masses (vanished anyway in a
process of sophistication and historical differentiation), in an artistic-politic project,
the artist may set himself to accomplish – had he read Brecht – the opposite
project, much more modest, but more efficient, of waking up, of alienating
through art. But, in order to exemplify my saying, let me illustrate how art can
wake up through alienation. In 2003, at the Venice Biennial, the Spanish artist
Santiago Sierra 24 has covered with black plastic the word “España” of the Spanish
pavilion façade, also blocking the main entrance to the pavilion with brick
walls. The public had to get round the pavilion building only to find a closed
backdoor, guarded by a doorkeeper wearing a uniform, who only granted
access to those who had a Spanish passport. Charles LaBelle, who signed the
critical review of the 2003 Biennial for the Frieze magazine, wrote that “Despite
the ludicrous suggestion that the purpose of the work was to call attention to
the plight of persons refused entry to numerous countries around the globe,
the true objective – juvenile and ham-fisted – seemed to be to piss people off.
For those unable to get inside, you didn’t miss much: Sierra had little to offer
the Spanish or anyone else.” 25 It is clear now that Sierra’s objective was not to
produce empathy, but to generate discomfort and frustration. Even those who
managed to enter the pavilion were disappointed to find it empty, with no
efforts to aesthetically sanitize the space. But juvenile? Ham-fisted? Ludicrous?
Sierra simply invited the Venice Biennial staff (of which art critique, inclusively
LaBelle, is a part of) to play their part, serving the same ideological hypokrisis
which creates the illusion of plural opinions, neutralizing the critique 26 (after the
second wave of institutional critique, the critique is neutralized because it is
replaced by representation 27 ) under the pretext of drawing attention to the discriminating
system of granting the visas. Sierra’s closing is meant to wake up
our consciousness and to pull it out the neo-liberal melodrama which also incorporates
the staff of the Venice Biennial, distancing (both physically and symbolically)
the art work from the members of the audience. By not granting the latter
what he expects to receive – the participation to an aesthetically regulated practice
– Sierra simply alienates him and, as a result, opens up his eyes for a whole
human condition machine-decomposed and ideologically recomposed.
Thus, how does art become alienating? Maybe it’s too difficult to draft a theory
here: but maybe it will be enough if we bet on the projects which invent their
own maneuver spaces and their own rules, which always present as betraying
the expectations of the art public, as symbolical violence and overturning the
established and shared values, as an ideological counteroffensive and, finally,
as a bitter and ironical self-aware expression of belonging to a play (a power,
a language one or a simple game), whose rules one cannot simply undermine,
but subversively change in the meantime.
