demult dezvæluit cæ însæøi særæcia cumplitæ a oamenilor, mizeria færæ
amuzamentul ei“. 8 Prin urmare, criza realæ, economicæ øi moralæ, a Parisului
burgheze øi a unui doux commerce“ 11 , øi chiar întorsæturile gîndirii speculative
hiding what is disclosed. Thus he proclaims as mysteries degeneracy (criminals)
within civilisation and rightlessness and inequality in the state.” 3 For Szeliga,
the perfect expression of the dialectics of concealing and manifestation is Rudolf
himself, “thefirst servant of the state of humanity”. 4 This character feels at ease
both as a fan painter and as a prince charming aiming to separate the wrong
from the right: with a little imagination, Rudolf turns into a substitute for the
Supreme Critic, or, as Marx wants to tell us, a miniature replica of God 5 , who
“really believes in a corporeal Satan and wants to catch the devil alive“. 6
This construction is false as well, as Marx shows, because Rudolf’s rescuing mission
is nothing more than the fulfillment of the bourgeois self-elation, no less
obvious in concealing and revealing the motifs of his actions. Rudolf exposes
to himself and to the others the bursts of his passions as bursts of anger against
the bad. Therefore, Rudolf is exactly the opposite of what he desires to be and
that’s why “he is by no means engrossed in the contrasts of contemporary life;
it is the contrasts of his own disguises that he finds piquant. He informs his obedient
companions how extraordinarily interesting he finds himself in the various
situations”. 7 Therefore, Rudolf’s oscillating between the bourgeois aristocracy
and the world of the mean streets is only the manifestation of a perverse taste
for a society play, for amusement: “Rudolph has thereby unconsciously expressed
the mystery which was revealed long ago, that human misery itself, the infinite
abjectness which is obliged to receive alms, must serve the aristocracy of
money and education as a plaything to satisfy its self-love, tickle its arrogance
and amuse it.” 8 As a result, the real economical and moral crisis in Paris is falsely
solved by Rudolf’s “critical” saving mission, critical in the most literal sense of
the term, that of “discerning, separating, uttering a verdict”, as we find it in the
character of the Supreme Critic which he himself assumes. For this reason, Marx
will label Rudolf’s character as pure (reinen) Heuchelei 9 , to the same extent as
der heuchlerische Herr Sue 10 and his work transposed into the expression of the
“douce morale and of a doux commerce” 11 , and even Szeliga’s twists of speculative
thinking (Wendungen der Spekulation), which are themselves heuchlerischen.
12 All these are thus hypocritical; there is one thing here which will make
us consider Marx and think twice before moving on, since is nonetheless true
that this heuchelei is the term used by Luther to express the Greek hypokrisis in
his translation of the Testament. In other words, beyond the usual meaning of
the word in our language, for which the referent of this name is a (contemptible)
propriety of a person’s nature, the hypocrisy-hypokrisis names an existential
condition which carries the condition of the crisis (etymologically, one of cleavage,
of separation) into a infra(hypo)real space only to finally replace it. And all
these take place in the subtlest and most tragic way possible or, more precisely,
they all take place in the way of the tragedy, since for the ancient Greeks
hypokrisis used to mean playing on a stage, with the actor disappearing into the
character’s body, it meant playing a part, thus dissimulating par excellence. 13
Marx’s critique veers towards the deconstruction of this stage sublimation which
replaces the reality of the cleavage, of this very tragedy, in order to show how
the Capital works by separating “the extreme poverty of the people, the boundless
misery forced to beg for mercy” from “the money aristocracy and the culture
aristocracy”, a critique which dissolves both the mask which replaces (the
critique of the criticism, whose expression is Rudolf playing God and finally Sue
himself, if we accept that the principle of Geroldstein is the latter’s alter ego)
and its own speculative reflection, since it equally takes part to the game identified
as hypokrisis (the critique of critical criticism or the critique of speculative
reflection of Rudolf’s critique, whose expression is the Hegelian Szeliga).
