investiga modul cum filmul produce semnificaflie øi a-i submina regulile.
øi a gîndirii înseøi).
øi a face film în mod politic. Videoul poate fi considerat drept un contradocumentar: el foloseøte convenfliile documentarului øi apoi le submineazæ;
In an older text, “Memoirs of a Video Activist”, I defined video activism not as video made by activists with an oppositional content, nor simply as eliminating the difference
between producers and spectators by involving non-experts in the process of production, but as questioning the dominant production of images and sounds and
reflecting on one’s own position in this system. The definition invoked a distinction made by Jean-Luc Godard between making a political film (a film about politics) and
making film politically. Making film politically means investigating how film produces meaning and disrupting its rules. It also means making the audience uncomfortable
and provoking them to reflect on their own position vis à vis power.
Although that text was written in the context of an older project, Godard’s distinction becomes explicit for the first time in Commonplaces of Transition. In Transit analyzes
the ideology of postcommunist transition, which functions through a series of erasures (of the past, of identities and of thought itself). But while the narrative criticizes
these erasures, it is not from the purity of an outside. In contrast to other films (like those by Péter Forgács) that criticize official history and oppose it with authentic
private histories, In Transit admits that private histories are themselves constructed and impure because memory functions like a dreamwork that erases connections and
creates new associations. Although admitting the complicity of subjectivity, the message of the video is not a pessimistic one: if history is a sum of erasures, it is our task
to dig through its pile of ruins and uncover the traces of things that have been lost.
Out of the 3 videos in the project, it is Two or Three Things about Activism that engages directly with Godard’s distinction between making political film and making film
politically. The video can be classified as a counter-documentary: it uses the conventions of documentary and then disrupts them; the second half destroys the first.
Two or Three Things about Activism begins with a richness of sound and image, immersing the viewer in the stories of Romanian activists, but increasingly becomes more
bare and fragmented, preventing identification and provoking thought. The form contributes to the goal: in a Romanian context in which activism is weak and made up
of isolated groups, the video hopes to be a tool for self-reflection, asking activists to see their own position from the point of view of the others. It doesn’t represent
Romanian activism, but tries to intervene in it from the inside, to provoke change.
Because postcommunism has erased the possibility of thinking alternatives to capitalism, because there is no tradition of activism or of an intellectual left in Romania, it is
common for activists and intellectuals to look outside for their models, often copying them uncritically and applying them to a context where they don’t fit. Many fall into
the trap of self-colonization – the desire, motivated by a feeling of inferiority, to internalize the models of the West as the only source of value. Precarious Lives examines
the currently fashionable theory of precarity, which posits a tendency toward unstable, part-time, short-term work in post-Fordist capitalism, and evaluates its failure in
explaining the realities of workers’ lives in Romania. The video is made by women and focuses on women’s lives. This is an indirect critique of the discourse surrounding
precarity, which is dominated by men and generalizes from their experience, but also of the Romanian context, where feminism is still an embarrassing word.
