Manifestarea postpoliticului*
(Harun Farocki, Judi Werthein, Roee Rosen, Eyal Sivan, Anna Faroqhi, Teufelsgroup,
personale despre holocaust).
Aceastæ prezenflæ masivæ are mai multe cauze.
MANIFESTATIONS OF THE POST-POLITICAL*
Edit András, Hedvig Turai
Manifesta 7, The European Biennale of Contemporary Art
Trentino – South Tirol, Italy, 19 July – 2 November 2008
At this year’s Manifesta, quite a few of the works deal, directly or
indirectly, with the Holocaust (Harun Farocki, Judi Werthein, Roee
Rosen, Eyal Sivan, Anna Faroqhi, Teufelsgroup, Tamy Ben-Tor, Valerie
Mréje). That is to say, they either directly refer to the Holocaust or
consider more general issues (identity, prejudices, identification,
archive, systematization) that cannot be avoided when it comes to
the Holocaust. This is a bit unusual for an international contemporary
art show, especially one cast as offering a chance to the younger
generation (that is, precisely to those artists who could not have any
direct personal recollection of the Holocaust).
There are several reasons for this notable presence. Those exhibition
segments dealing with historical places or with the issue of memory
can’t overlook the question of fascism, particularly the well-known
conjunction between the Italian futurism and fascism. At every point
in the exhibition one finds something about Mussolini, fascist architecture,
and fascism’s deceptive promise and hope for a glorious future.
The post-political 1 means the end of the political classically understood.
The citizens in the polis don’t have a say anymore in the city
affairs; they stand at the mercy of the media, of populism, and, in
our times, of globalization. In the 20th century, we already had the
chance to see an extreme example of this situation and this is why
it is important for us to return to Holocaust, and within it, to those
media techniques and films that appeared in connection with the
Holocaust.
The film of Harun Farocki analyzes this very fact: how seeing and creating
the visible occur, how they can be manipulated, and what
effect they have on “real“ events. In one of his film’s inter-titles,
he asks the question whether deportation might have taken another
course had there been more filming. Could the suffering have been
attenuated through filming? His film, called Respite, is being shown
at Fortezza, as a mute and efficient counterpoint to the sound installations
in the fortress. The series of images are interrupted by intertitles,
in the manner of silent films, accompanied by the commentaries
