Zone autonome pentru artæ:
modelul Neuer Berliner Kunstverein
Vlad Morariu
deteriorarea sferei publice øi a cîmpului socio-politic.
o armæ a hegemoniei simbolice.
Bourdieu 1 îl numeøte dialecticæ a distincfliei: distincflia, consacrarea, privilegiul øi prezenfla
în mainstream cunoaøte drept contraparte cæderea în trecut, clasarea øi clasicizarea.
Partea întunecatæ a consacrærii o reprezintæ îmbætrînirea artisticæ, survenitæ
AUTONOMOUS AREAS FOR ART:
THE NEUER BERLINER KUNSTVEREIN MODEL
Vlad Morariu
For reasons of clarification, let’s start by pointing out that a Kunstverein
is equivalent to what we would identify as an artistic association.
I care a lot for this definition as I wish to express from the very
beginning my conviction that the things I’m about to report next
are, in principle, possible in Romania, too. For similar reasons,
I’d like to tell, secondly, that this form of association assumes the
lack of a material profit shared among its members, but compensates
by taking over the fluxes of symbolic capital, whose accumulation
and (re)investment aims at strengthening the autonomy of the
institution.
The institutional autonomy was also the art field’s answer to the
challenges of the past century, which proved the insufficiency of the
tools which the artists had ready at hand when answering the crises
related to the historical heritage of art, to the shift of generations
and to the deterioration of the public sphere and the social-political
field. The developing means of expression, whose conceptual novelty
needed a space of its own capable of facilitating the access to the
means of communication, led to the acknowledgement of the necessity
of the institutionalization meant to open the way for a better
representation. As engaged in the struggle for conquering the
autonomy and thus placing itself ideologically within the field of
power, the solution which takes the form of a Kunstverein has always
been seen as a weapon of the symbolic hegemony. On the other
hand, however, the stability of the conquered positions has always
been relative – the symbolic capital is volatile and thus easy to lose –
the positioning and the repositioning function according to the
mechanism which Pierre Bourdieu 1 calls the dialectics of distinction:
the distinction, the establishment, the privilege and the presence
in the mainstream is counterbalanced by the fall into the past, the
classing and the classicization. The dark side of being established
is represented by the artistic aging, as a result of clinging to certain
ways of production and by the confinement in certain schemes of
perception and appreciation which render impossible the catching
of the new. With these being said, I have to notice that what is happening
today with Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) represents
a synthesis of the dialectical mechanism of distinction: n.b.k. has
known the establishing and the classicization and now is going
through a process of renegotiating its genealogy and of self-reinventing.
Therefore, discussing the n.b.k. case is worth the effort,
since the process which the Berlin institution is going through gives
it a paradigmatic status for the Romanian institutional initiatives
which try to function according to a similar logic.
The n.b.k. gallery was founded in 1969 with the aim to release and
disseminate to the broader public what contemporary art meant,
trying to integrate its concept in the emergent cultural processes.
Let’s not overlook the social-political context in which the n.b.k.
phenomenon occurs. I would mention, first of all, the temporary
interval right after the building of the Wall (1961), an interval
