Simon Starling: Trei pæsæri, øapte povestiri, interpolæri øi bifurcaflii
Muzeul Ludwig – Muzeu de Artæ Contemporanæ, Budapesta
13 iunie – 3 august 2008
numeroøi designeri øi fotografi sæ-i fie coautori.
Simon Starling: Three Birds, Seven Stories, Interpolations
and Bifurcations, Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art,
Budapest, 13 June – 3 August 2008
There are moments when the routine is disturbed and the common
reflexes which we use to analytically decompose an artwork shake.
This is more so when, passing through the periodical exhibition
organized by the Ludwig Museum, we realize that it is not easy
to asses what exactly the work is, without mentioning the difficulties
raised by the determination of its authors. We looked on the poster
and the author seems to be Simon Starling, 42, an artist rewarded
with the Turner Prize, but none of the objects exhibited are his
immediate creation. And since he remains hooked on these first and
fundamental questions, the viewer who wants to get wise and who
is forced by these ambiguities to stay humble loses any interest in
being critical. In the silence released instead of the critique, a story
thread begins to develop bifurcating and interweaving with the
threads of other stories. Telling stories is the most wonderful thing,
especially if the fairytale takes us back into the past and to exotic
landscapes, if there is a filthy rich Prince Charming and his exquisitely
beautiful lover, for the love of whom her lover man starts building
an enchanted palace. It’s even better when there are also Bengalese
tigers and technical inventions, not to mention belly dancers,
an invisible house and an evil dictator who makes his appearance
at some point.
Once we’ve let ourselves totally overwhelmed by the interweaving
story (stories), it becomes increasingly clear that Starling spared this
21st century, already packed with artworks, of creating a new work;
he only correlates existing creations and their authors, in a creative
order which turns the conception itself into an artwork. Thus, the
story is his, but the works belong to the characters, as Starling takes
on the documenting, withdrawing almost completely. For example,
such is the case when he invites a sculptor, two architects, three
movie directors and, along them, various designers and photographs
to be co-authors. But, first of all, he also invites a maharajah, who
is the greatest curator and protector of arts in history. As a result,
Three Birds, Seven Stories is not so much a work of art kept intact
within the sterile medium of the museum, but a piece of the very
quotidian, of the life weave, which, once placed into the space of
the exhibition hall, manages to build a bridge over the two worlds.
The work itself does not have anything to do with any particular
material. The spirit of the developing story (stories) is a sufficiently
