Considerations on the present-day situation of forests in Romania
Abstract
In the past, the proportion of forestlands of the present-day Romanian territory was about 80%. At present, it only
represents 27%, much lower than the optimum level of 45% and the ones of other European countries with similar site
conditions.
The largest deforestations took place after the important political events favourable to the Romanian people. The
forest areas also decreased during the communist period. Unfortunately, deforestation is also keeping pace at present as
a negative result of restitution of forests to the previous owners.
Nowadays, the Romanian forests are excessively divided, almost 1 million owners being in possession of very
small forest areas, impossible to be managed on a sustainable basis. Considering the area annually afforested, Romania
is on a dishonourable place in the European Union, about 3 million ha of unproductive land waiting for being afforested.
In the last period, the area of abandoned agricultural lands has increased. These lands are not suitable for a
profitable agriculture and should be planted for the ecological rehabilitation of the country. According to the new Forest
Law and The National Programme for Afforestation 2 million of degraded and abandoned lands will be planted until
the year 2035.
