Pro Silva Europe - 20 years of promoting close-to-nature forest management
Abstract
Pro Silva Europe was founded by a group of foresters in Slovenia in 1989 in order to promote close-to-nature forestry, which is
based on the sustainable natural forest dynamics processes which have been proven in time. Pro Silva promotes forest management
strategies which optimise the maintenance, conservation and utilisation/use of forest ecosystems and their diversity in such a way that
the ecological and socio-economic functions are sustainable and profitable. The general approach to management which is advocated
by Pro Silva, includes market and non-market objectives, and takes the whole forest ecosystem into consideration.
The traditional forestry (and agriculture) makes a separation/identifies between the production forest function and the regeneration
and development forest function working with successive interventions. The Pro Silva forestry considers all these functions
together during the same intervention, the continuous improvement of forest stands and forest sites and properties for the individual
development of forest trees.
Keywords: Pro Silva Europe, close-to-nature forestry, forest functions, improvement of forest stands
