A new criterion of the ecologic characterization of forests: the aesthetic-spiritual dimension
Abstract
In the author’s vision, the forest is more than a simple community of trees with its own environment; it is a living entity with
structures that suggest art products and metaphorically speaking it has an infinite, ineffable “soul”, a source of poetry and myth. From
the aspiration for heights, the connection with transcendental space results, from the way to structure vertically and horizontally the
characteristic aesthetic styles: gothic referring to the catholic religion in the case of uneven-aged, classic to orthodoxy and in the case
of unien and expressionism for the mixed undifferentiated structures.
From the phenomenological point of view, we can speak about a triple semantic aptitude: the forest, as a geographical, ecobiological
and aesthetic-spiritual phenomenon.
Another distinction can be made from the landscape point of view: the physical-geographical landscape and spiritualized
landscape (meta-landscape) considered as a special spiritual condition and an epic-lyrical open scene, as well.
Keywords: silviculture, philosophy, forestry esthetics
