cu Giovanni Carmine, curatorul expozifliei øi directorul Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen. Filmul
a verii.
cele trei cazuri, cititoarea are anumite dificultæfli øi dezvoltæ strategii personale de sustragere
both the high subversive and vanguard quality of his work.
Tempus agere est – Sankt Gallen (2007) is David Lamelas most
recent film of the body of works Time As Activity, a 16 mm-film
developed in close collaboration with the curator of the show and
director of Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Giovanni Carmine. The film is
composed of three parts, one shot in the world-renowned monastery
library in Sankt Gallen, the second shot in the church of the
monastery itself, and the third shot on the picturesque shore
of a pond, known by locals as “Weiher“ (literally meaning pond in
German) and largely used as close leisure destination during the
warm summer period. To understand the choice, especially of the
first two film locations, a brief look at the history of the city of Sankt
Gallen might be revealing: the corner stone of the library was
founded when the Irish Benedictine monk Sankt Gallus established
himself in the region in A.D. 612. From the 4,000 precious manuscripts
and incunables, around 400 date from before the year 1000.
Mediaevalists from all over the world visit the library every year
to study the history of early missionary in Europe. In all three
sequences, Lamelas asked the same female, beautiful and longhaired
performer to read in its respective language, Wolfram von
Eschenbach’s Parzifal (1260) in a “New High German“ version, some
thoughts in Latin on the world of the 5th century by Ambrosius
Theodosius Macrobius (ca. 395–423), and in French a treatise on the
subject of time in Denis Diderot’s Encyclopédie (1751). In all three
cases, the reader shows singular difficulties and develops personal
strategies to circumvent the specific challenges she encounters
by reading complex texts in languages she is not familiar with.
The performer’s strategy is not to get the sense of the sentences for
example by reading them slowly, but rather to load them in a playful
and fascinated way with arbitrary, mysteriously encoded meaning
through random intonation, emerged by letting her intuitively
lead by the echoism of the words. The three locations are embraced
by the camera movement, but only allegedly in accordance to the
flux of the words. And here again, consequently, Lamelas gives free
interpretation space to the viewer by allowing him to sample the
different levels of technological effects which lay in semantic, syntax,
and the visual. And to close my explanatory attempt with the
following inspiring words: “Time is the substance from which I am
made. Time is a river which carries me along, but I am the river;
it is a tiger that devours me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire that consumes
me, but I am the fire.“ (Jorge Luis Borges, A New Refutation
of Time, 1946/1964)
