David Lamelas: Time As Activity, 1969–2007
Cathérine Hug
Neue Kunst Halle, Sankt Gallen, 7 iulie – 9 septembrie
a prezentat Situation of Time [Situaflia timpului] la Di Tella Institute din Buenos Aires, o impresionantæ instalaflie
Lamelas din seria Time As Activity, avînd între 10 øi 55 de minute, sînt compuse din
4:31 p.m.“. Investigarea de cætre artist a nofliunii noastre de timp examineazæ atît
intersecfliile, cît øi contradicfliile intrinsece definifliei acestuia, provocate parflial de vizual,
parflial de componentele lingvistice. Sæ ne îndreptæm pentru început atenflia asupra
DAVID LAMELAS: TIME AS ACTIVITY, 1969–2007
Cathérine Hug
Neue Kunst Halle, Sankt Gallen, 7 July – 9 September
DAVID LAMELAS, born 1946 in Buenos Aires, has made a major contribution
to the definition of what is widely know as “conceptual art“.
He started practicing art in 1964 at the age of 19, three years later he
already won a price of distinction at the Biennale of São Paulo, and in
1968 was Argentine’s representative to the Venice Biennale as one of the
youngest national exponents at the prominent international exhibition.
Starting as a minimal art painter in the first four years of his artistic
career, he abruptly quit this technique solidly committed to minimal art
and monochrome painting at that time, in order to extensively experiment
with the yet unexplored range of possibilities of the new media
television and video. So, for example, in 1967, Lamelas showed Situation
of Time at the Di Tella Institute in Buenos Aires, an impressive installation
consisting of 17 television sets, switched on a non existent channel
emitting just the light of the screens. The catalogue suggested:
“The viewer must remain for the 8 hours during which the exhibition
remains open, to participate actively in time. Also of interest to the artist
is the path from one screen to the next, being the same and at the same
time different.“ The very nature of television was explored that way,
in extension how much a readable visual image is imperative to provide
information, and to what degree the intrinsic technological nature known
as “noise“ of the diffusing screen can captivate the viewer in its own right.
Ambiguity, irritation, time-based processes and emergence are pivotal
notions in the course of contemplation of Situation of Time, and simultaneously
already allude to the direction in which Lamelas’ continuous field
of topical interest will channel in the following years. As the altering
viewpoint of the spectator in relation with time and space has become
of central interest in his work, Lamelas declared that his “passage to
cinema was a simple question of normal evolution“. From there on, the
artist systematically worked with the given conditions of the 16 mm-film
medium and its specific technical nature.
Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen is presently showing in its completeness
David Lamelas’ group of works Time As Activity, composed of six
looped 16 mm-film-projections and one three-channel video on
monitors. The convolute is a work in progress dating from 1969
to the present and filmed in five different countries, whereas one of
the films has been created exclusively for the show in Sankt Gallen.
Furthermore, a performance involving the viewers took place on the
occasion of the opening day, July 6.
In the realm of theoretical approaches like those of Henri Bergson
(1859–1941) with Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate
Data of Consciousness (1910) and Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986)
with A New Refutation of Time (1946), Lamelas started to work
on film as a mirror of the spectators, also keen to make the aspect
of repetition, as the very nature of this technical device, aware to
