Robert Storr a hotærît
Faptul cæ o colecflie privatæ urma sæ reprezinte arta unui întreg continent a contat
THINK WELL, FEEL BETTER AND DIE HARD
The 52nd Venice Biennale, 10 June – 21 November, curator: Robert Storr
Check List Luanda Pop brings two novelties at the Venice Biennale:
a pavilion dedicated to the African continent, and the same pavilion
featuring a private collection. In the series of national representations,
76 in number this year, national can mean a region – the
Central Asia pavilion, a continent – the above mentioned African
or the selection presented by the Istituto Italo-Latino Americano,
it can mean a province like the Northern Ireland or Scotland or even
the New Forest (the National Park in the South of England) or an ethnicity,
like the freshly inaugurated Roma pavilion. However, the
African pavilion benefited from a special focus and a special location,
in the Arsenale, together with the – also new – Turkish pavilion.
Robert Storr decided to give the opportunity to more curators or
institutions from Africa to make themselves heard, so he made
an open call and 37 propositions were received, out of which a jury
selected a proposal featuring works from the collection of the
Congolese businessman Sindika Dokolo to be presented in Venice.
The collection is based in Luanda, Angola, on the basis of Dokolo
being married with the daughter of the Angolan president, and it
provided the main body of work, the patronage and the sponsorship
for the Luanda Triennale – an ambitious enterprise designed by
artist-curator and co-founder of the Dokolo collection, Fernando
Alvim. The fact that a private collection was to represent an entire
continent’s art counted as a positive argument for the jury, as collecting
is such a rare phenomenon in Africa. The scandals surrounding
this particular collector and the origin of his money were left
aside, and Storr claimed the importance of seeing African art
in Venice over the conditions in which this was present there.
The exhibition had two curators, one is Simon Njami, the curator of
Africa Remix, the largest and proportionally questionable exhibition
of contemporary African art seen in Europe, and the other curator,
Fernando Alvim, is a Belgian and Angolan artist who learned quickly
that package is everything in an art context, and whose approach is,
as he says himself, to “set up a concept framework, an office with
five people and to meet politicians”. Both of them are hardly “other
African voices”, not present in the European art context, as Storr
wanted in the first place, when he set up the open call. Also less
important was that many of the artists in the show are African only
by origin or by subject matter of their work: Marlene Dumas, Chris
Ofili, Alfredo Jaar, Yinka Shonibare, Basquiat or Andy Warhol to
name a few. After all, this suited perfectly Storr’s idea that artists
today do not confine themselves to geographical limits, so Africa
could be seen more like a state of mind than a reality in itself.
Thus at least this selection avoided the “danger” of being seen as
another “primitive” exhibition, such as the one of African sculpture,
organized by Vittorio Pica at the 1922 edition of the Venice Biennale
and instead had all the chances to share the vocabulary of the
Western aesthetic.
