capitalului, au sporit considerabil øi cîøtigurile provenite din muncæ;
apoi cea infrastructuralæ øi civilizaflionalæ), strategia statalæ a „cercetærii øi dezvoltærii“
space and time, because this endangers investments and economic growth,
the expansion of the labor market, and so on. Thus even if it does not compensate
for the loss due to competition or other external risks (although this
happens quite often), the state has to create a “balanced environment”
(according to the neo-liberal/neo-conservative orthodoxy), namely, it has to
constantly modify conditions in order to reduce market risks and to check the
related loss on the part of laborers for the sake of sustaining political stability,
peace in production and cheap labor force – the cheap reproduction of the
latter included.
According to this view, there is no class struggle, the two visible partners
being the capital and the state.
First: “there is no such thing as class struggle” is usually emphasized in situations
where the bourgeoisie is winning.
Second: the “clear” fronts of the class struggle are somewhat concealed in the
welfare (social) state by the rather high rate of redistribution [of social wealth],
by the considerable growth in incomes resulted from work, in comparison with
those resulted from the reinvestment of capital, by the increased income and
influence of managers over that of the traditional bourgeoisie, by the large
proportion of institutional and corporative investors as opposed to individual
ones, by the multiplied number and more influential political and cultural
power of intellectuals, by the replacement of the traditional military order with
organized leisure time, education, entertainment (holidays, sport, arts), and
innovation that became objects of state support, control and organization,
where planning and (military, infra-structural and “cultural”)
state commissioning, the so-called R+D (research and development)
state strategy played an increasingly significant role. The key figures
of this age – from De Gaulle to Willy Brandt and Harold Wilson –
have really thought that class struggle and (according to Daniel Bell)
“ideologies” (namely: proletarian socialism) are over.
Looking back from the year 2005, it is strange how the revolution of
1968 (1969 in Italy) burst forth precisely against these types of relations
(in the United States, influenced by the spirit of the time, it was the
right-wing Richard M. Nixon who created the modern social insurance and
welfare system and eliminated racial segregation), and against such forms
of “manipulation” and “co-opting”. As is it known – due to the treason of the
Euro-communist parties and of the trade unions they had led – “1968” was
defeated. It was at this moment that the neo-conservative revolution could
commence, suffocating the last upheavals of the Western working class with
the pseudo-Marxist concept of the “classless society”. By the time the relative
advantages of the Western proletariat, secured through the exploitation of
the “Third World” (this was the foundation for media theories heralding the
“end of ideologies” during the late ’70s), were dissolved, the ideological hegemony
of the bourgeoisie was back in force. For by this time, the bourgeoisie
– seriously questioned before by a radical counter-culture feeding on the
social-democratic welfare state: for instance Antonioni, the “new wave”, free
cinema, nonfigurative painting, student movements etc. – realized it does no
longer have to support the enemies of its own worldview.
The neo-conservative counter-revolution, within which the hegemony of the
bourgeoisie’s worldview became possible by the false reference to the then
already disappeared reality of the welfare state, smashed the entire “lifeworld”
of the latter. Groups of people were by that time divided not only by
categories of income, prestige, and status, but (once again) also by “pure”
