Scrierea lui János Kis pe marginea aniversærii a 25 de ani de la naøterea Solidaritæflii
(Népszabadság, 27 august 2005), replica mea (tot acolo, pe 1 octombrie)
øi ræspunsul lui la replica mea (8 octombrie) au adus în discuflie
chestiuni, dupæ mine, importante, indiferent de persoanele, pozifliile øi caracterul
mai mult sau mai puflin reuøit al textelor polemice implicate în aceastæ
dezbatere.
A clarifica aceste chestiuni e însæ imposibil atîta timp cît ignoræm specificul
acestei dispute.
Metode de polemicæ
În ræspunsul sæu la replica mea („Socialism, capitalism, politicæ: Ræspuns lui
G. M. Tamás“, Népszabadság, 8 octombrie 2005), János Kis foloseøte trei
trucuri adorabile.
Mai întîi, el schimbæ obiectul disputei. Critica mea fusese ocazionatæ de exprimarea
pozifliilor sale. El însæ nu mai pierde vremea cu apærarea propriei sale
poziflii, în schimb crede cæ pune sub lupæ ceea ce presupune cæ sînt gîndurile
mele.
În al doilea rînd: el consideræ cæ gîndurile mele pot fi analizate pe baza celor
cîteva comentarii marginale pe care le-am fæcut în ræspunsul meu polemic,
de parcæ n-aø scrie aceste eseuri de stînga de mai bine de unsprezece ani
(cf. „Adio dreptei?“, Világosság, 1994/5–6). Scrierile astea ar putea încæpea
într-un volum cam de o mie de pagini. Probabil cæ mæcar o parte din ele
le citise.
În al treilea rînd: cînd mæ supune pe mine interogatoriului despre ce vrea
socialismul, el pare sæ uite cæ e vorba de scopurile unui curent de gîndire,
ale unei direcflii øtiinflifice øi ale unei miøcæri politice ce existæ de mai bine de
douæ sute de ani, deci nu sînt tocmai necunoscute, aøa cæ, tocmai fiindcæ
ele se øtiu, nu e nevoie ca eu sæ le rezum la rîndu-mi de fiecare datæ. Ce-ar
zice el dacæ eu i-aø lansa întrebæri despre liberalism, întrebæri la care au ræspuns
deja cam de multiøor un Mill, Rawls sau Dworkin?
E clar ca lumina zilei cæ, în circumstanflele autocrafliei de azi a ortodoxiei liberal-conservatoare
în Ungaria, nu-mi ræmîn decît opfliuni pæguboase.
Dacæ János Kis mæ forfleazæ sæ adopt metoda sa polemicæ, atunci, rezumînd
„scopurile“ socialismului, analizele mele vor pærea utopice, ba chiar, la
„modul boløevic“, forflate pe realitate de undeva de deasupra øi din afaræ.
Dacæ nu voi face asta, atunci – în ochii cititorului care-øi aminteøte numai
parflial scrierile pe care le-am publicat în ultimul deceniu – concepflia mea
va pærea fie „goalæ“ (!), fie iresponsabilæ, cæci l-aø invita la o cælætorie a cærei
direcflie aø trece-o sub tæcere. Aceastæ metodæ de polemicæ (dacæ aø
accepta-o) ar servi, evident, foarte bine „înfrîngerii“ mele din punct de vedere
retoric, dar din disputa ca atare n-am afla nimic esenflial.
Nu vreau sæ-mi domin adversarul (din motive nu numai principiale, dar øi
de temperament, nu fac faflæ competifliei). Ceea ce e important nu fline de
pozifliile noastre intelectuale øi sociale.
DIVERGING PATHS
Another Reply to János Kis

I believe János Kis’ article on the 25th anniversary of the creation of the
Solidarity (Népszabadság, August 27, 2005), my answer (same publication,
October 1), his reply (October 8), have evoked rather important issues,
irrespective of the persons and viewpoints of the authors, and also of the
quality of our polemic texts.
However, these questions will remain unclear if we disregard the specificities
of this debate.
Methods of Polemic
In his reply (“Socialism, Capitalism, Politics: A Reply to G. M. Tamás”, Népszabadság,
October 8, 2005), János Kis makes use of three charming tricks.
First of all, he changes the object of the argument. My critique was triggered
by the exposition of his views, yet he hardly wastes any words on defending
his stance – engaging instead in a dissection of what he considers to be my
own thoughts.
Second: he seems to be analyzing my thoughts on the basis of certain excursive
remarks in my text, as if the left-wing essays I have been writing for the
last eleven years did not exist (see “A Farewell to the Right?”, Világosság,
1994/5–6). These pieces are enough to fill a thousand-page volume. He has
obviously read at least part of them.
Third: while asking me what socialism really intends, he seems to be overlooking
the fact that we are arguing about the objectives of a two centuries old
current of thought, scientific trend and political movement, whose aims are
not exactly unknown and of which I need not give extensive account precisely
because they are well-known. What would he reply if I asked him questions
about liberalism that had been answered long before by Mill, Rawls, or
Dworkin?
With his methods, forced upon me under the circumstances of the Hungarian
supremacy of the liberal-conservative orthodoxy, my choices are obviously
very poor: a brief sketch of the “objectives” of socialism will make my writing
sound utterly utopian. Moreover, they will seem to be forced upon reality
from outside and above, in a “Bolshevik” manner. If I choose not to do that,
then readers not acquainted with my writings of the last decade could consider
my stances as “empty” (!) or irresponsible, as I would be inviting them to
a trip to nowhere. Had I accepted these methods of polemic, they would offer
a perfect opportunity for my rhetorical “defeat,” but the argument would shed
no essential light upon its object.
I do not wish to overcome my partner in this argument (for reasons having
to do with both principles and temperament, I am less than competitive).
