sæ-øi poatæ træi viafla în conformitate cu propriile lor concepflii – dar asta e
valabil pentru toatæ lumea. Libertate øi egalitate au aceeaøi rædæcinæ. Din acest
motiv, cei ce cîøtigæ de pe urma schimbærilor sociale nu pot fi impasibili la
soarta perdanflilor. Ei au responsabilitatea ca defavorizaflii sæ nu fie frustrafli
de posibilitatea unei viefli demne de om. Acesta e idealul liberal al solidaritæflii.
Atunci cînd afaceristul tipic decide în ce sæ-øi plaseze banii, el fline cont în
primul rînd de speranfla unui profit cît mai mare. Pînæ øi muncitorul tipic e
interesat sæ aibæ un salariu mai mare (sau acelaøi salariu pentru o muncæ mai
uøoaræ, mai interesantæ). Tofli flin cont de interesele lor proprii, iar ca actori
economici ei nici nu trebuie sæ facæ altfel. În calitate de cetæfleni însæ, ei nu
mai pot fline cont numai de interesele lor. E de aøteptat ca ei sæ fie gata sæ
aducæ sacrificii colective pentru cei care au numai de pierdut din felul în care
funcflioneazæ sistemul economic.
Ce garanteazæ însæ cæ oamenii, care în viafla economicæ urmæresc numai
propriile lor interese, vor face, ca membri ai comunitæflii politice, ceea ce
le cere compasiunea faflæ de ceilalfli? Pentru asta nu existæ garanflii instituflionale.
Circumstanflele sînt uneori favorabile, alteori nu. Pe moment ele nu sînt favorabile:
în partea esticæ a Europei, asta se datoreazæ efectelor tectonice
ale schimbærii de regim, iar în partea vesticæ, crizei statului bunæstærii. Dar
chiar øi atunci cînd circumstanflele sînt favorabile, corectarea neajunsurilor
trebuie obflinutæ prin luptæ politicæ. Cultura solidaritæflii nu e un dat, trebuie
luptat pentru ea zi de zi.
Din aceastæ cauzæ, nu putem spune cæ Solidaritatea a cîøtigat pacea.
E drept, ea a creat o lume în care nu existæ luptæ sau victorie
finalæ. Dar nici înfrîngere finalæ. Cît træim în libertate, existæ øanse
øi pentru cauza solidaritæflii.
When the typical investors decide where to place their capital, their chief priority
is to select the possibility offering the greatest profit. Equally, the chief
priority of the typical employee is to work for the greatest possible wages
(or to find less, easier, or more interesting work for the same amount of
money). Each minds his/her own interest, and as economic actors, this is proper
behavior. All the same, as citizens, each has interests to mind beside his/her
own, and must be expected to join in collective efforts to assist those who
bear the disadvantages of the economic system’s functioning.
But where is the safeguard ensuring that people who follow their own interest
as economic actors, in turn, as members of a political community, perform the
acts demonstrating their commitment to solidarity? For this there are no institutional
safeguards. General circumstances of solidarity vary from favorable
to hostile. Currently, they are hostile, chiefly due to the tectonic effects of the
regime change in Eastern Europe, and the crisis of the welfare state in
Western Europe. All the same, even when they are favorable, to successfully
counteract inhumane disadvantages requires political struggle. The culture
of solidarity depends on a day-by-day struggle – it does not survive by itself.
Thus, neither are we in a position to say the Solidarity won peace. It created
a world without final battles and final victories, or likewise, final defeats.
As long as there is freedom, the cause of solidarity still has a chance.
