Picasso or the entire canon of Western art? What defines those new
lines of communication?
Matisse’s deceptively simple lines are formed by his mastery of
knowing how to look. Dan creates with a similar mastery paying
close attention to the line and subject matter. Unlike Matisse and the
Modernists however, Dan does not create with the intent to discover
the avant-garde or what is “new“. He seeks out the social ruptures
that already exist or are newly erupting.
His fearless honesty is a radical quality in the unstable environment
of today’s world. By virtue of being himself, Dan has been able to
produce invention using the generic though poignant stick figures
that materialize from his research and imagination. He co-opts these
generic tools with his drive to reckon with a world that teems with
unrequited contradictions.
Dan always builds a conversation – or a visual experience – by
resourcing what is immediately around his installation space.
MoMA being no exception, he finds common ground with Barnett
Newman’s Broken Obelisk, the dominating black sculpture in the
center of the Marron Atrium. His excited and humorous black lines
and images jump around the tall black column drawing it out into
an exchange that smacks of his typically humorous though respectful
rapport.
Dan never rests on his laurels and expects the same of other artists
living or dead. The historical art seems grateful to have the company
of a new, challenging conversation with a living artist. Dan has done
something I have never seen done at MoMA. His installation has initiated
a dialogue with the other works in the gallery that is about art,
its process and the particular way that an artist experiences art history.
The works have finally found a way to talk among themselves
beyond the curatorial decree.
Based on the dynamic conversation he is able to ignite, Dan adds
a new dimension to the stark, slick gallery transforming it into
a café or a salon, the central breeding ground for creativity during
Modernism’s heyday. He resists the attraction to hold a conversation
with the institution where his work is exhibited, a natural response
when making installation art. He taps into the treasure of MoMA,
the art, and I am pretty sure he would agree that’s the conversation
he came to have.
