scena
germane împotriva evreilor. Majoritatea vizitatorilor germani se vor bucura sæ audæ
asta.
„traumatizærii“ germanilor bombardafli, ci asupra crimelor germane.
cætre Sonia Abián Rose a Auschwitz-ului, în lucrarea ei The Concentration Camp of
Love [Lagærul de concentrare al iubirii]. Aceasta reuneøte fixaflia lui Buergel, de sorginte
agambenianæ, asupra ubicuitæflii lagærelor øi propria fixaflie asupra frumosului
– rezultatul fiind estetizarea Auschwitz-ului.
established between Israel and South-African apartheid). It turns out
that the most famous piece of the show, thereby, is also the most
problematic to the extent that it caters to anti-semitic fantasies.
No wonder it became the most prominent work in a Germany effectively
normalized under Schröder’s chancelorship (may it suffice to
remember that it was the “Red-Green“ coalition which for the first
time after 1945 sent German troops to war again).
But this is not the only normalization piece. With Van de Ven’s photographs
documenta turns toward explicit Anti-Israeli propaganda.
Given the curator’s usual anxiety not to have any texts coming with
the art works, one would expect that this time again, as in many
other cases at documenta 12, we would not get any translation
of the graffitis written in Arabic and photographed by Van de Ven.
However in this case the artist was allowed to provide us not only
with translations – from which we learn the interesting opinion that
Israel is guilty of having started all the wars in the area – but even
with additional texts printed together with the translations in form of
a propaganda brochure that one can buy at the book shop. An integrally
reprinted commentary by Azmi Bishara of the Al-Ahram weekly
kindly informs us that “the Holocaust must be contextualized“.
Surprisingly, the author does not mean by such “contextualization“
to flatly deny it. This would be ill-advised strategically, he says
– besides, it really happened. But the Holocaust denial of Neo-Nazis
and others would have to be seen in the context of what he calls
“another face“ of Holocaust denial, by which the author understands
“the Zionist’s“ attempt to monopolize the Holocaust and to use it for
their own political ends. From this he concludes that “any Israeli can
speak and act as the victim even if he has more in common ideologically
with the offender or the ’Capo’ – the Jews who cooperated with
the Nazis in the concentration camps“. Such disgusting anti-semitic
propaganda, which makes of Jews just another variant of Nazicollaborators
(if not Nazis themselves), is distributed in Kassel in the
name of documenta, and the only thing Roger Buergel has to say
about it is that this is a tremendously “complex“ conflict.
But the distribution of these examples of Arabic “soft“ or “enlightened“
anti-semitism sits comfortably with another text reprinted
by Van de Ven: a manifesto of 25 German political scientists calling
for the eventual normalization of Germany’s relation to Israel.
They claim that the Holocaust should not stand in the way anymore
of Germany’s “friendship“ with Israel; they in fact claim that precisely
because of the Holocaust – which brought a whole lot of European
Jews to Israel – Germany should now more actively support the side
of the Palestinians and, they imply, stop delivering weapons for
Israel’s self-defence. So, it is in post-Schröder Germany, in a show
organized by a German artistic director and a German curator, that
Palestinian refugee camps and the alleged crimes of Israel, including
a supposedly “Zionist face“ of “Holocaust denial“, finally turn out to
figure much more prominently among the contributions than
German extermination-camps and German crimes against Jews.
Most German visitors will be happy to hear this. There is only a
single piece that runs against the grain of German normalization discourse.
Yet Alice Creischer’s important contribution – concerned
with the personal continuity of Nazism in German post-war economy
– stands completely alone, buried, as it were, under all sorts of bad
paintings and idiotic guitar-installations surrounding it at the Auepavilion.
Other pieces which might have come in as a support for Creischer
are emptied by the curators of all contextualization that could potentially
point towards Germany’s Nazi past. I’m thinking here of
Martha Rosler’s photographs at the Aue-pavilion with one title alluding
to a “slave labour side near the railroad tracks, Kassel“ – no
details given. As Rosler reported at the opening of the show, she was
denied by Buergel the right to have an explanatory text pasted next
to the photographs. There is rumour that in the course of the show
some additional texts will be granted to some artists, although in
a completely erratic way and without any obvious strategy behind it
