scena
superficiale, are, într-adevær, efecte catastrofale: migraflia devine prin asta formalizatæ,
lui Abdoulaye Konaté, care alæturæ steagurile israeliene øi kaffiyeh-urile palestiniene;
în Germania, are statutul unei comori culturale naflionale.
East conflict and, in particular, on Israel. So when it comes to, in
Roger Buergel’s words, the alleged “Number 1 conflict“ in today’s
world, the conflict in the so-called Middle East, documenta 12 all of
a sudden gets politically explicit. Suddenly we even run into works
that are allowed to have text – on the premise, though, that they
accuse Israel in the most propagandistic of ways. Yet before returning
to anti-Israeli propaganda at documenta 12 let us just register
the mere over-representation of the Middle East-conflict simply in
terms of numbers of works concerned with it. Buergel and Noack in
fact have decided to grant this conflict the central role in their show.
While allusions to the conflict can be found in many contributions,
at least five of them deal exclusively with the alleged crimes of Israel
or the plight of the Palestinians: Ahlam Shibli’s photographs of
Palestinian Bedouin’s living places and of a Jordanian Refugee camp;
Abdoulaye Konaté’s more reconciliatory tapestries which bring
together Israeli flags and the Palestinian kaffiyeh; Yael Bartana’s
video of an Israeli-Palestinian “summer camp“ for the rebuilding of
among other things, Palestinian graffitis; and Peter Friedl’s Zoo
Story.
So what’s problematic about this numerical over-representation?
If Israel is really the No. 1 conflict zone in the world then one wonders
whether Buergel has heard anything about Darfur, for instance,
where thousands and thousands are slaughtered by Islamic fundamentalists.
This silence of documenta 12 on Darfur and other bloody
conflicts corresponds to the relative silence of Western media
regarding the genocide in Darfur, while simultaneously every incursion
of a single Israeli tank into the Ghaza strip is always reported on
the front pages in most newspapers. This discrepancy between overrepresentation
in one case and next-to-no-representation in the
other is precisely the symptom of a hegemonic, if sometimes subtle
Anti-Israeli public media discourse, not at least in Germany.
So, while the art-field in general is not very sensitive with respect to
the over-representation of the Middle Eastern conflict, the amount
to which this conflict in documenta 12 comes to over-write all other
conflicts is astonishing.
Let me, in order not to be misunderstood, clarify: I do not want to
imply that a critique of the policies of the State of Israel should be
banned from art shows in principle. But we have to ask what such significant
over-representation means, symptomatically, in the most
important German art exhibition – an exhibition which in Germany
has the status of a national cultural treasure. Nor do I want to imply
that all of the pieces concerned with this conflict are problematic.
Some of the works are largely unproblematic, like Konaté’s call for
reconciliation and, similarly, Bartana’s very nice video. Yet there are
other examples which are less than nice. Peter Friedl’s Zoo Story,
for instance, which feed into the “victimization“ of the Palestinians
frequently found in Western media (for instance, there is a tendency
in Western media to illustrate their reports on the Palestinians frequently
with pictures of children behind barbed wire). After the opening,
images of the giraffe Brownie brought to Kassel (for which Friedl,
it seems, had to negotiate with and find the support of the Hamas!)
abounded in German newspapers. The subtext of this picture, and
one of the reasons why the work was so successful, lies in the assumption
that the Israelis, cruel as they are, even drove this poor little
giraffe Brownie into a heart-attack. Friedl, who once at a Venice
Biennial answered Hans Haacke’s exhibition at the German pavilion
with the tasteless slogan: “I survived the German pavilion“, manages
to present us with the ultimate picture of victimhood: not only do
Israeli’s kill Palestinians at will, so the average German anti-semite
visiting the show may associate, they even kill infant Palestinian
giraffes who just managed to escape South-African apartheid rule
only in order to fall victim to the alleged Apartheid-regime of Israel
(that the giraffe was imported from South-Africa was mentioned
in most media reports, even as this information, one should think,
is entirely unimportant – yet it allows for an associational link to be
