This “privilege“ of text and context was not granted to other artists.
So, in the absence of any critical discourse, in the absence of any
context, the observer will be led to project his/her Westernist, perhaps
even racist fantasies onto to art works. Nothing is there to prevent
him/her from doing so – as Buergel made sure that the only
way open to the public to approach the art is by direct, unmediated
“experience“. As a result, it is not only on the floor of the exhibition
where a Westernist and often times racist dispositif is constructed,
it may also be in the head of the viewers. A very strange idea of “education“
indeed: let the people “feel“ the art – yet what they will mainly
feel in the absence of any critical framing is their own culturalized
racism. Exhibiting “the other“ as if no post-colonial critique of the the
Western view had ever been formulated and as if documenta 11 had
not existed – this is what Buergel’s re-turn to primitivism aims at.
This is most obvious in the way in which the work of Kerry James
Marshall is framed, or rather isn’t framed at all, since the only thing
we learn from Buergel’s catalogue entry is that the painter is interested
in the depiction of promiscuity, and that the formal qualities of the
work, mastered by this “grandiose painter“ (Buergel), are astonishing.
No word about the politics of Marshall and his fight for civil rights
in the US. His paintings, scattered over the show without context, are
therefore turned into simple depictions of “black faces“ and “black
bodies“; they are, as it were, primitivized. (Even in a so-called “intervention“,
where in the historical collection at Schloss Wilhelmshöhe
Marshall’s paintings are placed below two paintings of Karel van
Mander, the result – for reasons of, again, the total absence of discourse
– is simply a mimetic doubling of “black faces“, and not a serious
commentary on the colonial imaginary in art history.)
This deliberate primitivism or, rather, primitivization, goes hand
in hand with an exoticist and orientalist imagery. For instance, the
show is haunted by the notion and imaginary of the “World Fair“:
it is said that the new-built Aue-pavilion was initially inspired by the
Crystal Palace – at least until somebody realized that to exhibit art
in a glass building in summer is perhaps not the most feasible idea.
Manet’s 1867 painting of the Paris World Fair, presented as a reproduction
in the Neue Galerie, must be read along the same lines as
a programmatic statement placing documenta in the tradition of
World Fairs. Yet there are many other exoticist and orientalist signifiers
floating around: the German denomination for the circles
reserved for educational discussion is “Palmenhaine“ – palm groves.
Obviously, Edward Said is not the preferred reading of Roger Buergel.
And then, of course, 1,001 Chinese were brought to Germany and
basically confined to the city limits of Kassel. Without speculating
on the artist’s motivations, has anybody in the documenta team ever
thought about the tradition of bringing people to Europe as a spectacle
for European visitors at, exactly, “World Fairs“? It comes as no
surprise that this project of “cultural understanding“, as the artist
put it, ranked among the most successful with the German media,
as here we have a peaceful, exoticized “other“ who has the great
advantage of being locked right into an exhibition space (the city
of Kassel) for contemplation and then transported back home after
some time.
Given those instances, Buergel’s key theme of the “migration of
forms“ appears under a different light. In actual fact, documenta 12
is not so much about the “migration of forms“ as it is about the formalization
of migration. Buergel’s guiding principle that all content
or context has to be over-written by the experience of superficial formal
analogies has, indeed, catastrophic effects: migration thereby
becomes formalized, aestheticized, depoliticized – and eventually
turned into a spectacle.
3. Schröder’s Return: The documenta of Normalization
Apart from its notorious re-turn to primitivism, documenta 12 may
as well be a symptom for the eventual “normalization“ of Germany’s
past. The German normalization discourse proceeds by pasting over
the Nazi crimes, simultaneously projecting them onto the Middle
