Olivier Marchart
documenta 12, Kassel, 16 iunie – 23 septembrie
Aceastæ anunflatæ revenire a frumosului
surpriza tuturor, s-a dovedit cæ totul s-a petrecut exact aøa cum fusese anunflat: rodul
documenta 12 As a German Summer Camp of Reconciliation
Oliver Marchart
documenta 12, Kassel, 16 June – 23 September
1. A “Summer Camp of Reconciliation“
Shortly after it was announced that Roger Buergel would be the new
artistic director of documenta, he issued a press statement informing
the public that documenta would again grant a central place to
“the beautiful“. This proclaimed return of the beautiful in the arts has
rightly been interpreted by the press as a shift in documenta policies,
a return, after two explicitly political shows, to an exhibition with less
discourse, less theory, less politics, less criticality – and more beauty,
art history and silent meditation in front of the art work.
This is what everybody feared, given Roger Buergel’s press statements,
but nobody believed it would happen – until the show opened.
And to everybody’s surprise it turned out that everything came
exactly as it was announced: what Roger Buergel and Ruth Noack
curated is a documenta without discourse and without texts, but
with a huge tendency towards deliberate decontextualization, formalization,
aesthetization and “ornamentalization“ of the works
exhibited – all that adding up to the effective depoliticization of even
those political works that somehow found their way into the show.
Hence, Buergel and Noack have presented the proof that it is possible
to do an entirely non-political show even with a number of political
works. The only thing you have to do as a curator in order to get
rid of all politics is to formalize and aestheticize the contributions.
That documenta 12 is a totally non-, even an anti-political exhibition
has not passed unnoticed, of course. In one of the Kassel “lunch lectures“
Brian Holmes and Süreyya Evren tried to describe the “trap
of documenta 12“: While dX and d11 must be considered as tremendously
complex, risky and rewarding shows, d12 turns out to be
distinguished by the complete absence of any critical curatorial discourse
in, for instance, the catalogue. All we are left with are a couple
of vague curatorial allusions, while the positioning of the works
follows a “language of pure associationism“. As a result, and this is
where the trap lies, unintended meanings of a-political works spill
over onto political works and “political works become decoration“,
as Evren put it. However, Holmes added that he wouldn’t want to
torch this “summer camp of reconciliation“, as “leaving the wreckage
behind is probably a better solution“.
I largely agree with Holmes and Evren: documenta 12 is a non-discursive,
non-critical formalist enterprise. Yet “leaving the wreckage
behind“ is not an option as long as there is a danger that this wreckage
may succeed in shifting-back the very terms of debate within
the field. Ignoring a concededly dull show like documenta 12 and
returning to business-as-usual is not recommendable for two rea-
