RESPONSABILITATE-CUNOAŞTERE-ACŢIUNE

Responsibility–Knowledge–Action in Inter-War Romanian
Sociology
Abstract. The action-oriented dimension represents a fundamental
trait of Romanian Sociology since its foundation. It has been more salient in
the inter-war period, finding its most adequate expression in the conception
and activity of the Bucharest Sociological School. D. Gusti, its founder and
leader, considered that Sociology, and, in particular, the monographic one,
possesses a real capacity of scientific foundation and, consequently, of
increasing the efficiency of social action. D. Gusti has promoted the idea of
intellectual responsibility in the field of social knowledge and action,
constantly highlighting their close interdependence and inter-conditioning.
This idea was embodied in the Social Service Law, which focused on
concentrating and federalizing the fostering of individual or collective
knowledge of the social reality, as well as on compelling the academic youth
to overtake a research and cultural action service in the rural area.
D. Gusti’s idea regarding the unity of social knowledge and action,
together with his effort of making it real was not a singular moment in the
inter-war Romanian Sociology. From this perspective, it is also worth
mentioning the social research activity of the Banat-Crişana Social Institute
from Timişoara, as well as the one of Ion Clopoţel, both being subordinated
to the effort of contributing, through their research, to the work of reforming
the state and the society.
