Purpose and objectives: the study of the specific of the bakhtinian approach to the
novelistic prose proceeding from the poetician’s ideas concerning its dialogism, revealing
also the importance of the tradition of literary valorification of the principles of
carnivalesque poetics for the looming and development of the novel. The analysis of the
bakhtinian view of menippeah as a representative genre of carnivalesque literature and
elucidation of its structural features in order to determine its status in the present-day
literary theory. To interprete some Romanian novels in the light of the concepts „bivocal
word” and „world as a show”, emphasizing also the necessity to reveal the carnivalesque
characters and scenes.
Scientific novelty and originality: in this work are specified the contributions of
Mikhail Bakhtin to the philosophy of dialogue and also to theory of novel and to
“metalinguistics” as he defined this area of scientific research of the social life of the human
language. In order to demonstrate that the works written by Ion Creangă in the 19th century
are still of great interest for contemporary literary critics we highlighted their importance as
forerunners of the Romanian novels that are remarkable for the valorification of the
carnivalesque poetics. We also revealed the specificity of the carnivalesque prose written by
such novelists as Gib Mihăescu, Augustin Buzura, Constatin Ţoiu and Vasile Vasilache.
Important scientific problem solved in this area: the present work focuses on the
elucidation of the specific character of Mikhail Bakhtin’s approach to the carnivalesque
poetics from the standpoint of the dialogism that he elaboarted on account of the research of
the peculiarities defining the evolution of novel as a genre of the unofficial literature, the
Russian scholar being especially interested in the grotesque realism of the work of Fr.
Rabelais, the greatest representative of the literary carnivalesque tradition, and also in the
polyphony of F. M. Dostoyevsky as an essential stage of the development of the novelistic
prose.
Theoretical significance of the work lies in the elucidation of such bakhtinian
concepts as “menippeah”, “carnivalesque ambivalence” and “polyphonic novel” as their
comprehension is very important for the interpretation of the ideas formulated by the great
literary theorist.
Applied value of the work is due to the content of the last chapter in which some
outstanding Romanian novels are analysed from the point of view of the carnivalesque
poetics.
Implementation of scientific results: The essential theses of this research have
been published in 18 works. The author taught an optional course to the students at the
philological department of Ion Creangă Pedagogical State Uiversity and also participated in
the project The Bessarabian prose of the 20 th century. Text. Conetxt. Intertext that resulted
in the publication of a collection of scientific articles.
