Impactul rezultatelor asupra comunităţii<br />
ştiinţifice şi societate<br />
Prof. Dr. Virgil Păunescu a fost coordonator al echipei<br />
<strong>de</strong> imunologi care, împreună cu echipa Prof. Dr. Margit Şerban,<br />
a realizat primul transplant autolog (2001) şi primul<br />
transplant alogen (2002) <strong>de</strong> măduva osoasă din România. A<br />
fost promotor pe plan naţional al cercetării ştiinţifice cu<br />
privire la biologia celulelor stem şi potenţialul terapeutic în<br />
medicina regenerativă. A coordonat echipa din România implicată<br />
în proiectul integrat GENOSTEM care reprezintă<br />
unica participare românească în cadrul unui proiect integrat<br />
la competiţia FP6 pe domeniul „Life Sciences and Health”.<br />
Împreună cu Institutul <strong>de</strong> Boli Cardiovasculare Timişoara a<br />
realizat primul trial clinic privind aplicarea terapiei cu celule<br />
stem AC133 la pacienţii cu infarct miocardic (2003).<br />
Cercetările <strong>de</strong>sfăşurate pentru i<strong>de</strong>ntificarea unor surse alternative<br />
<strong>de</strong> celule producătoare <strong>de</strong> insulină ca terapie a diabetului<br />
zaharat au fost finalizate prin <strong>de</strong>punerea unui brevet<br />
<strong>de</strong> invenţie la US Patent (Brevet <strong>de</strong> invenţie nr.<br />
20060148079 - U.S. Patents: Isolation and purification of<br />
human insulin producing cells for the treatment of insulin<br />
<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt diabetes). A organizat şi coordonat o echipa <strong>de</strong><br />
studii in vivo pe animal care a stat la baza iniţierii a o serie<br />
<strong>de</strong> mo<strong>de</strong>le experimentale animale. Rezultatele obţinute au<br />
fost publicate, şi a fost <strong>de</strong>pus un brevet <strong>de</strong> invenţie în acest<br />
sens („Aparat <strong>de</strong> respiraţie artificială pentru animale mici <strong>de</strong><br />
laborator (şobolan, cobai) cu un nou tip <strong>de</strong> valvă expiratorie”<br />

Prof. Dr. Virgil Paunescu coordinated the immunologists’<br />
team who performed in collaboration with the team<br />
coordinated by Prof. Dr. Margit Şerban, the first bone marrow<br />
autologous transplant (2001) and the first allogenic<br />
transplant (2002) in Romania. At national level he was the<br />
promoter of scientific research employing biology of stem<br />
cells and their therapeutic potential in regenerative medicine.<br />
He coordinated the Romanian research team involved<br />
in GENOSTEM integrated project, which represents the exclusive<br />
Romanian participation within an integrated research<br />
project in Frame Work Program 6 competition, ”Life Sciences<br />
and Health” priority. Together with Cardiovascular<br />
Diseases Institute in Timisoara, the first clinical trial on<br />
AC133 stem cells application in myocardial infarction<br />
(2003) was accomplished. The researches focused on i<strong>de</strong>ntification<br />
of alternative sources substituting the insulin producing<br />
cells as diabetes mellitus treatment conclu<strong>de</strong>d in a<br />
patent application at US Patent (US Patents no.<br />

Prof. Dr. Virgil Paunescu organized and coordinated<br />
the research team working on animal mo<strong>de</strong>l experiments.<br />
The results were significant and published, and a patent application<br />
was granted (OSIM Bucuresti, no. A-00783-<br />
6.10.2006:”Artificial respiration <strong>de</strong>vice for small laboratory<br />
animals (rat, guinea pig) using a new expiratory valve”).<br />
