Proinflammatory cytokines in periodontal disease<br />

Summary<br />
Bacterial plaque and local inflammation are essential in the evolution of the<br />
parodontal disease. Studies of this disease have indicated increased proinflamatory<br />
cytokines in the crevicular liquid. In our research we intended to quantify some<br />
inflamatory cytokines - IL-1β, IL-6 şi TNFα in serum, in order to evaluate to which<br />
extent a local inflammation (in the oral cavity - such as parodontal disease) may<br />
influence the cytokines levels in serum, at systemic level. Healthy subjects with no<br />
other known chronic inflammations and patients with diagnosticated parodontal<br />
diseases in different evolutive stages, were selected. Our results showed significantly<br />
increased levels of cytokines, two to ten folds normal values, especially in TNFα,<br />
known as well to be involved in stimulation of bone resorption.<br />
