The name of the city
The valley between the mountains
The name of the city of Cabreúva originated from the
tree of the same name, which belongs to the leguminosaepapilionoideae
family. This tree was known to the
Indians as “Kabure-Iwa”, which means Owl Tree. It
has medicinal properties and has a wood density of
0.91g/cm³. The liquid released by this type of wood is
aromatic and widely used in folk medicine.
It is believed that the city got its name because of the
use of the trunk of the tree, as a bridge for the population
to cross over the Ribeirão dos Padres River. Today, called
Ribeirão Cabreúva.
The city is part of the Verde Azul Municipality and
holds 41.16% of the Serra do Japi territory..

In the early 18th century, a representative of the
Martins e Ramos family, from the city of Itu, began
exploring the right banks of the Tietê River, up to a
valley located between five mountains. It was in this
valley that the city of Cabreúva began.
After the occupation of the valley, between the
mountains that today are called Japi, Guaxatuba,
Guaxinduva, Cristais and Taguá; that the family
started the cultivation of sugar cane, for the
manufacture of brandy. With this cultivation, many
mills were installed on the site, which was the main
economic means of the city for a long time, which

made it known as the “Land of Drip”.
The then district of Cabreúva was created on
December 9, 1830, being subordinated to the
municipality of Itu. Later it became a village and
thus separated from Itu, through Provincial Law
nº 12, of March 24, 1859. Cabreúva reached the
category of city from the State Law nº 1,038, of
December 19, 1859. 1906.
The current mother church of the city was built in
1856 in honor of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, who is the
patron saint of Cabreúva..
Bordering municipalities: Itu, Indaiatuba,
Itupeva, Pirapora do Bom Jesus, Araçariguama and
Jundiaí.
