Operation London
Bridge
From the moment of death, Operation London Bridge was
activated, as a transition to the new holder of the British
crown. The queen's private secretary, Edward Young, was
the first official (ie not one of the royal family or part of a
medical team) to break the news. His first act was to contact
Prime Minister Liz Truss, to whom he notified the
phrase "London Bridge is Down" via secure line, initiating
the plan.

The Global Response Center of the Foreign and Commonwealth
Office was the body in charge of communicating the
news to the governments of the other fourteen countries of
which the queen was head of state (the realms of the Commonwealth),
and to the governments of the other countries of
the Commonwealth of Nations.
The media were informed through an announcement by the
Associated Press (AP Media) and the BBC, through the Radio
Alert Broadcasting System (RATS) and by Independent
Radio News for all other commercial stations. The announcement
was followed by a series of radio codes, which changed
to music, pending the release of the news flash, with BBC
Two suspending programming to unify programming with
BBC One. BBC News aired pre-recorded footage of portraits,
during which the presenters prepared for the formal announcement
by wearing dark clothing prepared for the purpose.
The Guardian went so far as to report that The Times had an

testing it for a long time at the time, substituting the monarch's

At the time after his death, Prince Charles of Wales, eldest
son of the queen and Philip of Edinburgh, assumed ownership

His wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, became queen consort

An aide placed a dark-edged sign on the gates of Buckingham

palace's website faded to black showing the same notice. The
United Kingdom Parliament has to organize itself to hold an

The coffin was covered with the Royal Standard of
Scotland, a flag that represents the monarch. Unlike the
royal standard used in England, Wales, Northern Ireland
and elsewhere, the Royal Standard of Scotland features
two quadrants for Scotland rather than just one. Those
quadrants are formed by a golden banner with the Scottish
red lion. It is hoisted at the Palace of Holyroodhouse
and at Balmoral Castle when the monarch is not present.
When in residence, the Royal Standard of the United

The Scottish
Crown
The Scottish Crown Jewels are made up of
three main elements: the Crown, the Scepter
and the Sword of State. In the coat of arms of
Scotland, the lion rampant appears wearing
the crown, and holding the scepter and sword
in his hands.
The currently preserved Crown of Scotland
dates from 1540, when James VI of Scotland
ordered the goldsmith John Mosman to reform
the original crown. That same year, King
James used it at the coronation of his consort
at Holyrood Abbey. The origin of the original
crown is unknown, although it can be seen in
its primitive form in the portrait of James IV of
Scotland that appears in the Book of Hours
created on the occasion of his marriage to
Margaret Tudor in 1503.

The ring that surrounds the base is
made of Scottish gold, encrusted with
22 gems and 20 precious stones, coming
from the previous crown. Freshwater
pearls, obtained from the rivers
of Scotland, were also used. The four
gilt arches of the crown are ornamented
with gold and red enamelled oak
leaves, apparently made in France. In
the place where the arches meet, there
is a gold orb enameled in blue and
adorned with gold stars, on which
rests a large cross decorated in gold
and black enamel with a rectangular
amethyst in the center. The top and sides
of the cross are also adorned with
pearls. In total, the crown weighs 1644
grams.
