MARK YOURCALENDARS!DISCOVER! | APRIL 2, 2022Nature | 5KATE HARLOW | STAFF WRITERTelling talesOnce a month Emily Ostranderlikes to tell tales.But the naturalist for LyonCounty Conservation keeps themto truthful tales about animals andnature during the monthly NatureTales children’s program.The Nature Tales for the month ofApril will take place at the Little RockPublic Library at 3 p.m. Wednesday,April 6, and at the George Public Libraryat 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13.The program is aimed at schoolage children over the age of 5 andlasts 45 minutes to an hour.The program runsmonthly from October throughApril and has been a part of Ostrander’sofferings for more than 10 yearssince she started working with LyonCounty Conservation.Each month offers something newfor the kids to learn about.“We just had endangered species,with an elephant tusk, whale’s tooth,a hawksbill sea turtle mount andmuch more, and we have had animaltongues with a chameleon, then wealso had animal babies with babyducks,” Ostrander said. “I have notreally repeated anyof the programs in10 years. Sometimeswe follow themeslike the books bySandra Markle‘What if you haveanimal ears, feet,tongue or fur?’”April’s theme willbe “Eggs and Nests.”Each Nature Talesprogram starts thesame way.“We always startNature Tales with abook or two. We doa game or activity —like in February wedid bird beaks andused different toolsto try and eat likebirds, like tweezersfor a woodpeckereating bugs out ofthe wood, a syringefor a hummingbirdsucking nectar outof flowers and tongsfor a great blue heron eating fish inwater,” Ostrander said. “We playedan eye spy game to see if we haveeagle eyes. Then we end with a craftor a snack that follows the theme.This month we will be making abird’s nest chocolate snack.”In an effort to teach the kids moreabout eggs and nests, Ostrander ismost looking forward to showingLyon CountyConservationoffers Nature Talesyouth programthem the replicas of eggs from differentbirds.Ostrander just plain enjoys hostingNature Tales.“It’s a fun thing for kids to do afterschool in the winter months,” Ostrandersaid. “It’s also a great way topartner with libraries to get kids into check out books and learning newthings.” FNature Tales is a monthly programoffered by Lyon CountyConservation that takesplace from October throughApril.
