>> Como foi sua chegada à diretoria executiva da ABAF?
Fui convidado em 2011 pelo setor florestal da Bahia para organizar
e reestruturar a ABAF, que representa o florestal em
todo o nosso Estado, cuidando dos objetivos de integração
dos pequenos e médios produtores na cadeia produtiva florestal.
Sempre trabalhei e me dediquei às entidades empresariais
e tinha uma experiência com o setor de fibras naturais,
que me ajudou a aprender mais rápido o processo das atividades
florestais. Acredito que todos nós empresários temos
muito a ganhar com a associação e a interação com os demais
colegas de setor.
>> Qual a principal área de atuação da ABAF?
A ABAF tem a responsabilidade de fazer o setor crescer de
forma ordenada, com todos os cuidados de sustentabilidade
e ESG (Ambiental, Social e Governança, em inglês). O setor
florestal tem crescido bastante, investimentos nacionais declarados
até 2024 ultrapassam R$ 50 bilhões e a Bahia quer
ter uma parte cada vez maior, destes, desses investimentos.
Por isso nós estamos nos organizando para mostrar esse potencial.
Em setembro fizemos o lançamento nacional do Bahia
Florestal 2021 e para nossa surpresa, mais do que positiva, tivemos
498 inscritos de 22 Estados. Isso demonstra o interesse
na expansão, principalmente em investimentos de produtos
que nós temos baixa participação. Mostramos que a Infraestrutura
que está sendo criada na Bahia, na área rodoviária e
na área ferroviária, vai permitir os investimentos em várias
regiões novas do Estado. As novas áreas disponíveis para
investimentos foram viabilizadas por duas ferrovias, a centro
atlântico, de norte a sul, e a FIOL (Ferrovia de Integração Oeste-Leste),
que estão sendo implantadas no Estado. Isso vai trazer
novas áreas que podem ser utilizadas para a implantação
de polos agroindustriais planejados para florestas plantadas.
>> Quais as vantagens de afiliação a ABAF?

How did you become appointed to the executive board of
ABAF?
In 2011, I was invited by the Forestry Sector in the State
of Bahia to organize and restructure ABAF, an association
representing the forest activities throughout our state,
taking care of the objectives of integrating small and medium-sized
producers in the forest production chain. I have
always worked and dedicated myself to business entities
and had experience in the Natural Fiber Sector that helped
me learn the forest activity faster. As such, I believe that all
of us entrepreneurs have a lot to gain from the association
and the interaction with other industry colleagues.
What is the central area of activity of ABAF?
ABAF has the responsibility to grow in an orderly manner,
taking care of all sustainability and environmental, social,
and governance issues (ESG). The Forestry Sector has
grown considerably. At the national level, the investments
declared by 2024 are expected to exceed R$ 50 billion, and
the State of Bahia wants to have an increasingly larger
share of these investments. That’s why we’re organizing to
show this potential. Thus, in September, we launched Bahia
Florestal 2021. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise for
us, as we had 498 subscribers from 22 Brazilian states. This
demonstrates interest in expansion, mainly in products
where we have low participation. Furthermore, we have
shown that the infrastructure created in the State of Bahia,
in the roadway and railway area, will allow investments in
several new regions in the State. The new areas available
for investments in the State were made possible by
building two railroads, the Atlantic Center, from north to
south of the State, and The West-East Integration Railway
(Fiol), which is being built in the State. This will lead to new
areas that can be used to implement planted forest and
agro-industrial poles.
What are the advantages of ABAF membership?
ABAF is fully representative and operates in 40 different
forums, where we respond to the demands and suggestions
that involve the future of the Sector. The forums deal
with public policies, financing, control, and environmental
licensing, among other items. Without a doubt, the
permanent participation of the entity, always steered by
member interests, leads us to a condition of participation
in constructing these public policies.
How do you see the possibilities of forest market growth
in the State of Bahia?
We have large company projects throughout the State.
The State of Bahia has 600 thousand hectares of planted
eucalyptus, the fourth-largest producer in the Country. We
conserve 340 thousand hectares, notably by the pulp and
paper produces, responsible for 15% of the Country’s pulp
production. We have only 3% of paper production, only 2%
in the Cerrado area, thus attracting producers to invest in
