Evolution!
What’s up?
Evolution! What’s up? Contains eight regular units in the student book, eight units
in the workbook, and two review units. It can be used for either a 45 or 60-hour
of class tutoring. The teacher should when possible propose extra activities from
the students as a way of enhancing the program, taking into account the groups needs,
purposes, and availability of time.
This book is meant to help you out give firm steps in the English learning process, and
also to prepare you to be ready to travel around the world feeling more integrated with the
environment with which you might come across as you venture into new possibilities in your
life.
Special attention has been given in the communicative approach through the various
activities which have their foundation in the interaction of peers in the classroom. For this
reason, every situation can be used by the student as an input for him or her to transfer not
only the situation but also the vocabulary to his or her own personal experience. We also
believe it is prominent that the students enhance vocabulary through the reading of texts
which deal with cultural issues as well as everyday situations in the form of writing, such
as journal entries, e-mails, as well as the narration of events. Both the textbook and the
workbook provide a variety of reading and writing exercises to reinforce the grammar and
vocabulary.
Evolution! What’s up? Is a way of starting a conversation and in this way of interacting
with others. Thus, it is a way of getting to meet new people, making friends, learning about
different cultures, places, and ideas. Practice in each unit is designed to stimulate conversation
and guide the students in describing the scenes, speaking about their personal information,
and expressing opinions about various topics.
Some of the conventions used in the book are as follows: a slash mark as in “Yes, I do.
/ No, I don’t.” indicates that students have an alternative and should give the information
that is true about them. The underlined words such as in “What’s your mother’s name?”
indicate that they can be substituted for other words, in this case “father’s”, “brother’s”, and
so on. In other words, it is a way of having you practice the language and therefore learn it in
a creative and fun way.
We have intended to provide a basic resource of language and culture to be used in
basic level classes as a main text. It is our hope that our texts and conversations, along with
the exercises proposed and the illustrations will stimulate you and your students to enjoy and
discuss each topic at hand. We welcome you to share your ideas with us.
Have a great time,
Naiara Sales Araújo

History of the English Language
The history of the English language really started with the arrival of
three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD.
These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North
Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time
the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celtic
speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what
is now Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Angles came from “Englaland”
[sic] and their language was called “Englisc” - from which the words
“England” and“English” are derived.

Photograph - (Ed Sheeran)
know it can get hard sometimes It is the only
thing that makes us feel alive
keep this love in a photograph We made
these memories for ourselves Where eyes are
never closing Hearts were never broken
And time’s forever frozen still
So can keep me inside the pocket Of ripped
jeans
Holding me close until eyes meet You won’t
ever be alone
Wait for me to come home
Loving can heal Loving can mend your soul
And it’s the only thing that I know I swear it
will get easier
Remember that with every piece of you
And it’s the only thing we take with us when
we die
We keep this love in a photograph We made
these memories for ourselves Where eyes are
never closing
hearts were never broken And time’s forever
frozen still
So can keep me inside the pocket
Of ripped jeans
Holding me close until our eyes meet You
won’t ever be alone
And if you hurt me that’s okay baby Only
words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me And I
won’t ever let you go Wait for me to come
home
Oh you can fit me Inside the necklace you
got
When were sixteen Next to your heartbeat
where I should be
Keep it deep within soul
And if you hurt me Well that’s okay baby
Only words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me And I
won’t ever let you go
When I’m away
I will remember how you kissed me Under
the lamppost back on 6th street Hearing
you whisper through the phone Wait for me
to come home

8. Reading - Read the text below and answer the questions:
Why is family support important?
Family is the single most important influence in a child’s life. From their
first moments of life, children depend on parents and family to protect
them and provide for their needs. Parents and family form a child’s first
relationships. They are a child’s first teachers and act as role models in how
to act and how to experience the world around them. By nurturing and
teaching children during their early years, families play an important role
in making sure children are ready to learn when they enter school. Children
thrive when parents are able to actively promote their positive growth and
development. Every parent knows that it’s sometimes difficult to do this
important work without help, support, and additional resources. http://

10. Reading. Read about Christmas in these countries. Is it different from your country?
Christmas has only been widely celebrated in Japan for the
last few decades. It’s still not seen as a religious holiday or
celebration as there aren’t many Christians in Japan. Now
several customs that came to Japan from the USA such as
sending and receiving Christmas Cards and Presents are
popular. In Japan, Christmas is known as more of a time
to spread happiness rather than a religious celebration.
Christmas Eve is often celebrated more than Christmas Day. Christmas
Eve is thought of as a romantic day, in which couples spend together and
exchange presents. In many ways it resembles Valentine’s Day celebrations
in the UK and the USA. Young couples like to go for walks to look at the
Christmas lights and have a romantic meal in a restaurant - booking a table
on Christmas Eve can be very difficult as it’s so popular!
Christmas in Russia is normally celebrated on January 7th (only
a few Catholics might celebrate it on the 25th December).
The date is different because the Russian Orthodox Church
uses the old ‘Julian’ calendar for religious celebration days.
The Orthodox Church also celebrates Advent. But it has fixed
dates, starting on 28th November
and going to the 6th January, so it’s
40 days long.
The official Christmas and New
holidays in Russia last from December 31st to January 10th.

9. Reading: Read about Paulo Coelho and answer the questions:
Paulo Coelho was born in 1947 into a middle-class family, the son of Pedro,
an engineer, and Lygia, a housewife. At seven, he entered the Jesuit school
of San Ignacio in Rio de Janeiro. Paulo came to detest the obligatory nature
of religious practice. However, although he hated praying and going to
mass, there were compensations. In the school’s austere corridors, Paulo
discovered his true vocation: to be a writer. He won his first literary prize
in a school poetry competition, and his sister, Sonia, recounts how she
won an essay prize by entering something that Paulo had discarded in the
wastepaper bin.

The site has been a pilgrimage destination since earliest times and
remains an important stop for Holy Land pilgrims today.
The modern Church of the Annunciation is topped with a uniquely-shaped concrete dome 55
meters high. Its shape is based on the Madonna lily, a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Inside, the basilica
consists of an upper church and a lower church. The vast upper church is decorated with mosaics of the
