Through its metaphorical or concrete meaning, theBotanical Garden is a place where diversity finds the desiredspace to construct and reveal itself, to make statementsabout the potentialities of painting. They are portraitslandscapesthat reflect a personal and intimate pursuit ofthe creative process, as well as express the discovery of theimminent need to break with some technical rigidity ofperspective, thus transporting us to more two-dimensionalimages, enhancing also other illusions.Maria Condado's work has followed an approach ofresearch and artistic experimentation where theconstruction of scenery (landscapes and portraits) isgoverned by the symbiosis between nature and artificiality. Itis in this register that the exploited atmospheres evolve intothe system of conjugation and coexistence between nowthe absence of elements, or their last profusion. Therefore, the proposal of a “pictorial limbo” is generated between theimportance of line / shape and color, without disobeying theorganization of contents that a certain abstraction mightperhaps encourage. The artist presents a combination of two pictorial phasesthat, in any case, differ from the paintings previouslyexposed: on the one hand, landscapes appear with thepunctuation of characters identified as portraits; on theother hand, landscapes where the once prominent aridityand ruin developed into the denser representation ofnature, whose ornamental and detailed character now givesit a state of rejuvenation and (re) encounter with thepresent. ”Rita Santos2009
