is like taking a punch to the face from a

loved one and wanting, even needing, more.

Within the warm and gentle contours

of their sound lies a dark and unsettling

undertone. Exploring universal themes

like sadness, heartbreak, and hope, Beach

House is guaranteed to make you feel the

emotions you don’t necessarily want to feel,

but need to feel.

It is this attraction between the duo that not

only produces the most intense, heartfelt

music of modern day, but also results in

the most aestheticay consistent band in

independent music. The band has toured

extensively through the years, performing

not only their own tours but also at count-

less festivals around the world. The feeling

when witnessing the pair perform is unexplainable

in words; like their recordings,

it’s something you need to feel for yourself.

The band always starts out enshrouded in

darkness. As their sound s the venue, they

slowly reveal themselves, bathed in clouds

of moody color. The show always evokes the

same dream space felt in their music, using

various lighting structures and instaations

to convey their otherworldly aesthetic. Put

simply, watching Beach House perform live

is like experiencing a far out universe

through a dream.

of the most musicay dense and textured

bands of the century. Using experimental

riffs on the guitar, keyboard, and drums,

the band produces musical contours that

can convey and evoke emotion better than

any words ever could. The dark, unsettling,

yet somehow dreamy sounds can make

you feel ethereal, or as if you’ve completely

ascended the earthly plane into some

kind of space-like dream sequence.

“One thing Victoria and I can agree on

is that our music is its own world. And,

I think that’s very much what the ‘Beach

House’ feel is: going off to a different

world,” says Scay.

The band’s rst release, the self-titled

Beach House album in 2006, received

acclaim from indie reviewing powerhouse

tion for future releases including Devotion

in 2008, Teen Dream in 2010, Bloom in 2012,

Depression Cherry in 2015, and 7 in 2018.

With each release, the band pushes the

envelope more and more, exploring even

less tangible themes and further obscuring

their meaning. Songs from Beach House,

such as “Master of None,” speak directly to

the feelings associated with specic, though

relatable, events — or, rather, as directly as

Beach House can be. Between wailing synth

and punchy lo- drum patterns, Victoria

chants, “You always go to the parties / To

pluck the feathers off a the birds / On

your knees / I would not beg you please,”

signaling the emotions of indelity of

young lust, or — to speak to something even

more painful — the indelity of a budding,

unrequited love. The idea is reinforced by

a music video showing vignettes of young

adults at a party.

Conversely, on the band’s most mature

release, 7, Legrand’s voice is help captive

by creeping synth, hypnotic chimes, and a

singular looming drum pattern on the

track “Black Car,” cooing, “We want to go

inside the cold / It’s like a tomb, but it’s

something to hold / And in the time before

it ends / When the stiness bends/I skipped

a rock and it fe to the boom.” Even

more perplexing is the accompany music

video, which merely shows close up shots

of a driverless black car. Despite the mystery,

the song transcends concrete experience

into raw thought and sentiment of that which

is a dark, dim void speckled with hints of

linguistic light.

Though there is a clear emphasis on the

texture and density of the sound and music

itself, clearly one of the most intriguing

things about Beach House is their lyrics.

Victoria’s haunting yet hypnotic voice

keeps you enthraed, whilethepoeticbut

punchy lyrics absolutely wreck your brain.

Somehow, the band can articulate seemingly

inexplicable deep human emotion, oen

using single words enshrouded by dreamy

synth or fragments of ctional events

pieced together like some kind of sick montage.

For example, on the track “Space

Song,” Victoria echos, “Fa back into place.”

The lyric has little context, but somehow it

has so much meaning and feeling. And when

coupled with wavy, beachy synth, you begin

to feel yourself suspended in space, driing

from a place you don’t belong back to where

you came from. As the lyric repeats, you can

visualize the times you overstepped, the

times you took chances and experienced rejection,

the times you thought you weren’t

good enough to be somewhere or be in the

company of someone. A these experiences,

thoughts, and feeling are encapsulated by

this single line. Despite the feelings and

emotions this might evoke, one can nay

take some comfort in realizing they are

not alone in this human experience.

Despite such haunting, dreamy, and even mysterious lyrics and

imagery, the members of Beach House have been described as

nothing but curious and warm. They joke about their indie fame,

poking fun at the idea of a come down. In fact, Victoria has

admitted that she in no way tries to seem so distant. Rather, the

words and sounds of the band are an attempt to quantify and

articulate intangible feelings and emotions — a catharsis of sorts.

Though this reach sometimes comes across as a jumble of

Legrand herself put it best when she stated, “It’s a lot easier just

Songs on Heartache prompt feelings of

desperation, loneliness, rejection, and

loss. As you listen through each recording,

you wipeekintovignettesofthestages

of a failed romantic relationship — from

the high point of the relationship in

“Somewhere Tonight,” to the point when

things start to sour on “Other People,”

to later bitterness with “Astronaut.” The

variations between slow and aggressive

tempos, partnered with scattered synth

and piano melodies, create the same

neuroticism felt within these events. Join

the record as you, too, romanticize the

nostalgia of a past failed relationship.

This song depicts one moving through flings,

but is left feeling empty. The title relates to

“jack of all trades, master of none” referring

to many lays but lack of a companion.

You always go to the parties

To pluck the feathers off a the birds

On your knees

I want your picture but not your words

from a lover. She

seems rather somber due

to the fact that her

former lover had never

returned the same

dedication to their

broken relationship.

PPP stands for “Piss

Poor Planning”, a term

widely used in the 60’s

and 70’s. The couple in

the song are getting

married, and one of them

is having doubts about

whether or not they were

ready for the plunge.

Walk in the Park Teen Dream 5:23

You go for a walk in the park

Cause you don’t need anything

The hand that you sometimes hold

Doesn’t do anything

The face that you see in the door

In and out of my life

You would slip from my mind

In a matter of time

The face that you saw in the door

The world that you love to behold

Cannot hold you anymore

In a matter of time

It wislipfrommymind

In and out of my life

You would slip from my mind

In a matter of time

More you want more

You te me

More

Only time can run me

This song is about losing someone that you

were in love with and how you move on. The

walk in the park represents a meaningless

activity because you might feel empty and

without purpose after the loss.

According to Victoria, this song is about “an

old starlet sitting in a bar in the dark by

herself; someone who maybe had an insane life

no one to talk to but themselves now.”
