oportunidade. Nós viemos de
16 anos de um Governo que
criminalizou e praticamente
inviabilizou nosso setor
em diversas frentes, nos
transformaram em grandes
vilões do meio ambiente
>> Como avalia o momento para o setor florestal no Brasil?
Acredito que é um bom momento, que nós vivemos um momento
de oportunidade. Nós viemos de 16 anos de um Governo
que criminalizou e praticamente inviabilizou nosso setor
em diversas frentes, nos transformaram em grandes vilões
do meio ambiente. Distorceram os fatos e fizeram com que
grande parte da população na massa brasileira e mundial tivesse
uma visão distorcida do que é o setor de base florestal.
Hoje estamos enxergando a oportunidade de mostrar a verdade,
de falarmos que a preservação de floresta é existente hoje
no mundo. Uma vez que, através do manejo florestal sustentável,
nós conseguimos conciliar a preservação ambiental da
flora, fauna e o desenvolvimento social e econômico da região
Amazônica Brasileira. Então, a maior ferramenta que tem
de aplicação mais rápida e mais eficaz é isso. O manejo, nada
mais é do que essa conciliação e, nós, enquanto setor de base
florestal, mais do que nenhum outro setor precisamos da
floresta em pé. Para isso, o Governo precisa nos dar as condições
para execução desse manejo florestal, parte em alguns
Estados pela regularização fundiária, pela ordenação, projeto
de manejo corretamente e pela desburocratização como um
todo, além de desmistificar a execução e a exploração florestal
no Brasil. Temos um enorme potencial, nós temos a maior
parte da floresta nativa do mundo e detemos pouco mais de
1% do mercado mundial de madeira serrada, beneficiada e
etc. Ou seja, é uma riqueza muito grande que está aí a mercê
e os empresários, que tem coragem e expertise para fazer,
sofrem demais. É muito difícil você trabalhar com produção
florestal na Amazônia Brasileira. Vejo que isso é tangível e
nós vamos fazer de tudo para atingirmos esse objetivo.
How do you see the Forest Sector in Brazil at the moment?
At the moment, I believe the Forest Sector is doing well
and that we are living in a time with many opportunities.
We have spent 16 years with a Government that
criminalized and practically made our Sector impossible
to operate in, on several fronts, and turned us into the
villains of the environment. It has distorted the facts
and has led to a large part of the population in Brazil,
and the world, having a distorted view of the Brazilian
Forest-based Sector. Today, we have the opportunity
to bring out the truth, to say that, today, forest preservation
exists in the world. Since, through Sustainable
Forest Management, we have been able to reconcile
the environmental preservation of flora, fauna, and
the social and economic development of the Brazilian
Amazon Region. So, the best tool that results in a quicker
and more effective application is this reconciliation.
Sustainable Forest Management is nothing more than
this reconciliation, and we, as the Forest-based Sector,
more than any other sector, need a standing forest. For
this, the Government needs to give us the conditions to
carry out forest management, in some States by land
regularization, order, correct management projects, and
debureaucratization as a whole, in addition to demystifying
forest activities in Brazil. We have enormous
potential, have the largest part of the native forest in
the world, and hold just over 1% of the world market for
sawn wood, lumber, etc. That is, there is great wealth
waiting to be exploited, but entrepreneurs, who have the
courage and expertise to do so, suffer much too much. It
is very difficult for one to work with forest production in
the Brazilian Amazon. I see overcoming this is a tangible
goal and we will do everything we can to achieve this.
In this scenario, what are the main challenges for the
new administration?
Today, the world is behind sustainability and the environmentally
correct. So that’s the challenge. We have
to reach out to our consumer, the citizen who wants
to build a house, the woodworker, the carpenter, and
the bricklayer and show them that wood is a natural
material, that they, when using wood, they are helping
the environment and using a product that above all is
100% renewable. There is nothing used in construction
more renewable than wood. From the moment when
we harvest a mature tree, it is already in the dying
stage, starting to rot; forest management turns it into
a beam, plank, board, or block. There, we make room
for renewal. Seeds will emerge and 10, 15, 20, and 30
new trees will emerge in that place. The tree plays an
important role in ecological balance, which is carbon
sequestration and it does so as a young tree is born and
keeps growing. It’s born and reproduces, and completes
its role. It is in a putrefaction stage when we harvest it
for use in architecture, engineering, and interior design.
