Os imigrantes muçulmanos e seus descendentes desfrutam, no mundo
ocidental, do pleno direito de cultivar a sua religiosidade. Ainda que, por vezes,
sejam objeto de manifestações de antipatia por parte de alguns indivíduos,
isso em nada se compara ao que os cristãos e outras minorias experimentam
nos países islâmicos. Existe a necessidade de uma transformação na religião
islâmica conforme entendida e praticada na atualidade, de um retorno à atitude
mais flexível, aberta e coerente de outros tempos. Num mundo que se depara
com tantos problemas angustiosos como a superpopulação, o esgotamento dos
recursos naturais, o desequilíbrio ecológico, a fome e a miséria, a religião não
pode ser mais uma fonte de medo e insegurança.
abstract
The beginning of the 21 st century is witnessing events in the realm of
religion with great historical significance. Islamic radicalism is haunting the
world with its persistent aggressiveness and broad scope. The Middle East,
North Africa, and parts of Asia, Europe and North America have been the
stage of extremist fanaticism and violence. In special, Christian communities
living peacefully in Muslim countries are being the targets of horrible cruelty.
In several regions, the remaining Christianity is on its way to extinction. Many
observers and scholars assert that such actions represent a grotesque distortion
of Islam and are not in harmony with the true spirit of that religion. Time after
time, internal and external apologists state that historically the Muslim faith has
fostered tolerance and peace. The aim of this article is to reexamine this issue
by looking at Islam’s sources, its history, and the developments in recent years.
