Elizabeth Gomes, Catarina de Siena
abstract
Catherine of Siena’s outstanding life and work show how a simple, pious
woman became an ambassador, counselor, and doctor of the church as she
attempted to influence and reform a corrupt ecclesiastical structure, as well
as a venal and devious political system, from the inside out. She influenced
popes, prelates, women, friars and nuns, kings and vassals in medieval Europe.
Remaining inside the Roman church, she recognized some of its heresies and
sought a repentant faith from those in power. She was the woman who made the
strongest impact on her time and context, out of love for “the blood of Christ”.
