The subtleties involved in a lighting project are an intriguing topic. After all, the
light that allows us to see, playing such an important functional role, is the same
which, when well-employed, can transmit feelings, bringing out the desired mood
within a chosen space. This edition of L+D brings together projects in which the
lighting played an important role in the definition of differing atmospheres for
divergent uses: a commercial centre, a home, a church, a residential centre for
senior citizens... The particularities of each of these spaces were reference points
for the elaboration of the lighting projects presented here.
Furthermore, this edition contains a special review of the Cidade Jardim
Shopping Centre, in São Paulo, with articles not only on the lighting of the
shopping centre itself, but also on that of selected stores within it.
And, finally, we bring you the best of the most recent Lightfair, a very important
event in the lighting field, with its extensive and highly professional
programme of lectures and workshops, in addition to the most innovative
products introduced at this trade fair.
produzida. A imagem gerada, portanto, terá duas leituras: pixelada
TECHNOLOGY + ART + SUSTAINABILITY A huge media wall recently
became a part of Peking’s urban landscape. With 2,292 RGB LEDs on its
front façade, the Xicui entertainment centre building, designed by architect
Simone Giostra, innovatively combines technology with architecture,
a trend now internationally known as “mediatecture”.
This project is remarkable, not only for being one of the largest coloured
LED displays in the world (equivalent to a 2,200 m² monitor), but especially
for using the first photo-voltaic system integrated with a glass curtain in
China. By these means, the skin of the building is transformed into a “selfsufficient
organic system” — in the architect’s own words — storing solar
energy throughout the day and using it to light up the screen at night, in
the same manner as occurs in the 24-hour climatic cycle.
The choice of a low-resolution screen is tied in with energy economy.
Thus the LED panel uses only the energy it produces. The image generated,
however, offers two ways of looking at it: pixellated at short-range, it is
sharp and well-defined when viewed from afar, as it mostly is, since the
A “pele”
Outra peculiaridade do edifício: as projeções terão caráter exclusivamente
A further peculiarity of the building: the projected images are to be
exclusively artistic in nature, and not advertising as is usually the case with
other huge panels. “This media wall will give the city of Peking its first
building devoted to digital art, at the same time offering the most radical
example of the application of photo-voltaic technology to the whole skin
of a building carried out so far,” claims Giostra.
VERSATILIDADE ENGENHOSA
LOW-TECH, HIGH QUALITY The use of low technology was no impediment
to the young Italian designer, Luca Casarotto, in designing a light
with tremendous aesthetic impact and intelligent functionality. During
the Foscarini Lab workshop, sponsored by the Foscarini company, the
designer developed the Penta hanging light, built simply out of sheets
of recycled polyethylene. The way in which these sheets were arranged
is what endows the object with its main feature: its ability to transform
so as to adapt the light it emits to varying demands. “When open, it creates
light and shadow that transform its 15 sides into a dynamic visual
game suggesting rotational motion. When closed, its function changes
and it becomes a light source which, without losing its scenic qualities,
emits a directional beam,” Casarotto explains.
Lighting Design Awards). (Por Winnie Bastian)
Inside the building, the lighting designer also worked on integrating
the lamps and lights into the architecture, in this case seeking to emphasise
the elliptical shape of the corridors. The lighting concept created by
Raoul Hesse also makes great use of daylight, which bathes a number of
corridors. In those spaces the daylight cannot reach, domes fitted with
compact fluorescent lamps (55W) of high colour temperature (6500K)
simulate the presence of skylights.
Hesse makes the argument for his choice of mainly using fluorescent
lamps (tubes and compact) in this project: “the maintenance cycles were
maximised and the power consumption optimised”.
Throughout the whole project, the lighting designer used no coloured
lamps or filters: white light only was used (though of varying colour temperature).
“Colours are reserved for shops and advertisement”, he explains.
In certain situations, such as the façade, the reflected light takes on nuances
of colour due to the surfaces of the materials used.
The perfect integration of the lighting design with the architecture assured
the Liliencarré shopping centre a special mention at the last IALD
NATURE ILLUMINATED In the history of architecture, the forms of
nature have habitually been drawn on as a point of reference for the creation
of unique works. For the Rio de Janeiro architects, Rafael Patalano and Ivo
Mareines, the source of inspiration for the design of the Casa Folha [“Leaf
House”], as the very name indicates, derives from the plant world. Located
in Angra dos Reis, in Rio de Janeiro State, this building — and especially
its curving wooden structure — has been enhanced by the lighting project
conceived by lighting designer Airton José Pimenta. The preponderance of
dark natural finishing materials in the building represented a considerable
challenge for Pimenta, who strategically combined a series of different
resources to achieve a well-lit space.
The ground-plan of the dwelling is like a six-petalled flower, the biggest
of the petals taken up by the living and social areas. The two-storey ceiling
height keeps in evidence the laminated wood structure and the bamboo
ceiling lining above, both emphasised by copper light fittings with antiglare
shades, using high-power LEDs (Dragon Eye, 1,2W, 2700K). Fitted on
the beams between the rafters, these Dragon Eye LEDs provide a stronger
Also within the social area, features, such as the barbecue grill counter
and living-room furniture, are picked out by copper light fittings housing
halogen lamps with precise beam control (AR111, of 8° to 24°), in downlight.
“The idea was to produce precise and dramatic lighting, with subtle nuances
of light and shade, that would combine with the more open lighting on
the ceiling,” adds the lighting designer. At the tip of each “leaf” or “petal”,
halogen downlights (PAR30, 65W, 3000 K) demarcate the floor area.
A marked characteristic of this house is the integration between the
interior and exterior areas. To enhance the landscaping and emphasise
the plants, Pimenta made use of various different types of light source.
The medium-height plants were lit with Dragon Eye LEDs, and the vegetation
surrounding the house with compact fluorescent lamps (14W) with
an open beam, giving rise to a smooth transition between interior and
exterior. Greater emphasis was given to the coconut palms using halogen
lamps (PAR30, 75W). Clad with dark green mini-tiles, the pool is lit with
dimmable dichroic lamps (12V, 50W, medium beam width).
Home automation, according to Pimenta, was an essential resource, since
the design combines interior lighting scenes with those for the garden.
“This is a complex project,” he affirms. With 20 years of experience as an
industrial draughtsman and lighting designer, he created most of the lights
in copper, a material that, besides its resistance to corrosion, sets up a harmonious
dialogue with the environment’s trellised bamboo ceilings.
The bedrooms are treated to indirect, open-beam lighting coming from
copper covings fixed to the rounded beams and fitted with the latest generation
of fluorescent tubes (T5, 28W). “In my projects, I usually standardise
the colour temperature of fluorescent lamps by using them with a colour
correction filter to get the desired lighting,” explains the designer, who
called for a correction filter (Cinegel) to reduce the colour temperature
3000K lamps to 2300K. Fitted to the ridge beams, between the joists,
autor do projeto luminotécnico.
The Casa Folha lighting project’s main challenge was how to provide
good lighting in spaces filled with glass and dark finishing materials reflecting
little light. In this respect, one of the parts demanding the greatest care
on the part of the lighting designer was the circulation area adjoining the
living room and the home theatre. Uplights (PAR30, 75W, 3000K), sunk
into the floor, light not only the wooden walls surrounding these areas,
but also the trellised bamboo ceiling. In spite of the difficulties imposed
by the dark-coloured, textured, natural materials, Pimenta recognises the
fact that they were themselves responsible for making this undertaking
such a pleasurable experience. "It is a beautiful, hand-crafted house," he
concludes. (By Valentina Figuerola)
CONFORTO
LUMINOSO
COMFORT IN LIGHTING Hiléa: the name used by the German naturalist,
Alexander Humbolt, to refer to the Amazon jungle — source of great
wealth and diversity — was chosen to christen the first residential and
development centre for senior citizens in Brazil, which is also a pioneering
venture in Latin-America. Hiléa’s goal is to offer the elderly a home (either
permanent or temporary), leisure and assistance (whenever necessary), all
in one place, allowing them to continue to lead full lives.
In this context, the physical environment plays a fundamental role, since
it is a well-known fact that the features of the surroundings are directly
related to the quality of life of its occupants and users. For this reason,
not only do the interior architecture and decoration make use of certain
universal design concepts — facilitating user self-sufficiency in cases of
locomotive, visual or cognitive impairment — but great care has also been
taken to create cosy and intimate spaces with a homely atmosphere, so as
to transmit the feeling of comfort and safety. To do this, warm colours and
materials were chosen which would ward off any kind of associations with
health centres or hospitals, since the philosophy here was quite different.
In keeping with this notion, the lighting project uses, in the main, light
sources of a warm colour temperature, which, being more like residential
lighting, help to make the atmosphere less impersonal.
The greatest challenge presented by this lighting project was to reconcile
aesthetic considerations with the psychological. Setting out from a number
of research papers on the subject, drawn up by various overseas institutions,
lighting designer Antonio Carlos Mingrone sought to create spaces that were
both physically and psychologically pleasing to the old people, according to
their specific needs. One of the requirements had to do with contrast: the
eyes of the elderly take more time to adapt to different light levels, so it is
desirable that contrasts be as reduced as possible. “We had to create different
lighting zones without causing this shock to the principal users, as the
impact of scenic lighting can be disturbing,” Mingrone discloses. Thus, shiny
or highly reflective surfaces were avoided in making up the spaces and a soft
diffuse type of lighting was chosen, of a generally uniform nature.
This approach is noticeable as soon as you enter the building on the
ground floor: an area that is at once both spacious and welcoming,
flooded with even and comfortable light, greets the visitor. Besides the
reception area, the ground floor also accommodates sitting, games and
comuns.
quente (3.000K). No centro deste retângulo, luminárias pendentes (com
lâmpadas incandescentes de 100W) pontuam a decoração, trazendo
aconchego ao ambiente. Nas laterais, lâmpadas halógenas dicróicas do
tipo Energy Saver (35W, 36 º ) embutidas complementam a iluminação.
As fontes
Neste andar, merece destaque a escolha do lighting
(150W, 4.000K).
projeto luminotécnico do Hiléa. Abaixo, vista do
lighting project. Below, view of the restaurant
dining areas as well as an events hall.
The ground floor lighting uses a combination of three types of lamps:
fluorescent (both tubes and compact lamps), dichroic halogen and standard
incandescent lamps. In the sitting and reception areas, compact fluorescent
lamps (23W) with a warm colour temperature predominate. In the restaurant
area, the overall lighting comes from a large rectangular coving fitted
with T8 fluorescent tubes, with a colour reproduction index of over 90 and
a warm colour temperature (3000K). At the centre of the area surrounded
by the coving, pendant lights (using 100W incandescent lamps) punctuate
the decor, bringing cosiness to the surroundings. On the side walls, built-in
dichroic halogen lights of the Energy Saving variety (35W, 36°) complete
the lighting. All of this lighting equipment is dimmable.
The basement level is devoted to physical and leisure activities: here are
located workshops for manual activities, swimming pool, gym halls, a physiotherapy
room and a garden terrace. These are lit by fluorescent lamps, either
tubes (T8, 18W — in the gym and workshops) or compact (26W — in the
corridor). Fluorescent sources are widely used throughout the project, with
a view to reduced energy consumption. On this floor, worthy of note is the
lighting designer’s choice to vary the colour temperature in the different
areas: while the rooms themselves are lit in cool white (4000K), seeking
an atmosphere similar to daylight, in the corridor a warmer tone of light is
used (2700K), “with a view to furnishing a more intimate atmosphere for
these more impersonal areas,” according to the designer.
The pool, also on the basement level, received a different type of treatment:
to avoid glare from eventual reflections on wet surfaces, general
indirect lighting was chosen, achieved by means of assymetrical-flow spotlights
fitted with metal halide lamps (150W, 4000K). “By client choice, no
underwater lighting was installed,” Mingrone informs us.
On the first floor, a recreation area was provided, which can also serve
the purposes of miscellaneous activities, as well as socialising among the
users: a “square”, around which are distributed various services such as a
hairdressers, a barbers and a cinema. The environmental planning of this
area makes use of scenic architectural features that remind one of a 40’s
square. The aim, according to architect Luana Radesco, who took part in
the development of the architectural project and oversaw its implantation,
is to stimulate the memory of those with cognitive weaknesses (Alzheimer’s
disease, for example). “The results have been extremely positive, with people
feeling very happy here,” she states.
As squares are usually open-air spaces, the most appropriate lighting
solution for this scenic square would be to incorporate natural daylight
into the setting. So, natural top-lighting was the first choice to come under
consideration. “But then we thought better not to pursue this course,
since some people might suffer a mild bout of depression at sunset. So
then we looked for a kind of artificial lighting that would serve in place of
natural top-lighting,” Luana explains. A huge lighting fixture incorporated
into the ceiling, using built-in T8 fluorescent lamps (18W and 36W) gives
the impression of a skylight. The light sources are of two different colour
The interior architecture, designed by architect Arthur de Mattos Casas,
uses a contemporary and sparing language, without, however, abandoning
the refinement. “The garden-lined corridors have been lit in a homely
fashion, as if they were the gardens and terraces of a house,” explains
Esther, who chose to use plentiful indirect lighting, in a warm tone, so as
to make the most of the sophisticated interiors.
huis clos
Refinada e moderna.
qual a luz do dia”.
Modern and refined. These are the adjectives that best qualify the ladies’
wear store, Huis Clos, just opened at the Cidade Jardim Shopping Centre.
In keeping with the label’s image and with the interior architecture by
architect Arthur Casas, lighting designers Gilberto Franco and Carlos Fortes
developed a lighting project that stresses the clean forms of this space, lit
diffusely and without drama. In the two-storey area, fluorescent tubes
(T5, 28W, 3000K), built into a large rectangular recess in the ceiling, pour
out a flat light over the whole area, smoothly distributed by a translucent,
stretched canvas sheet.
“The lighting should not dramatise the space, but just exploit it and
emphasise the ‘formal intent’ of the garments,” states Franco. He explains
that, in this store, “the light seems to come from every where or from nowhere
in particular, just like daylight.” In spite of this, some of the items
require additional emphasis, as, for example, the objects in the accessories
showcase, which were highlighted by groups of built-in directional lights
with halogen lamps (AR111, 50W, 8° ).
The area under the mezzanine gets its light from a white ceiling lining
of perforated sheeting, over which were added acrylic diffusion screens
to spread the light from fluorescent tubes (T5, 21W, 3000K), fitted to the
underside of the suspended concrete floor. “This solution creates the feeling
of a cloudy day, something like the light trying to creep out from behind
the clouds,” explains Franco, who, during the installation, made use of a
series of mock-ups to test the results. The challenge here, according to him,
lay in the fact that it was not possible to seal the perforated sheets with
acrylic, as was done on the side-walls of the store. “The air-conditioning
circulates through the ceiling lining, so that the sheets could not be completely
sealed with acrylic here,” he explains.
To allow air circulation and yet block visibility of the lamps, the lighting
Os espaços são claros, amplos e requintados. O pé-direito é duplo.
Assim poderia ser caracterizada a loja Mixed, localizada no 1º
pavimento do Shopping Cidade Jardim. Ao elaborar o projeto luminotécnico
do estabelecimento, o lighting designer Guinter Parschalk
The environment is light, spacious and refined. There is a two-storey
ceiling height. This description fits the Mixed store, situated on the first
floor of the Cidade Jardim Shopping Centre. When planning the establishment’s
lighting project, lighting designer Guinter Parschalk chose to use
integrated lighting effects that would enhance the surroundings and,
principally, the articles on sale.
The display cabinets built into the walls were highlighted with fluorescent
lamps (28W, 3000K) supplying diffuse, indirect lighting. From the front, these
furnishings are emphasised by narrow-beam halogen lamps (PAR30, 75W,
10°) built into the ceiling. Wider beam halogen lamps (PAR30, 75W, 30°),
for their part, emit light spilling outwards onto the white surroundings.
Besides the halogen lights, the store’s uplighting is accomplished with
metal vapour lamps (PAR30, CDMR, 35W, 30°), which, according to Parschalk,
have a yield five times greater than that of other halogen lamps, a longer
working life and they produce less heat. “I mixed different kinds of lamps,
but of the same size and format,” he adds.
One outstanding feature of this store is the serving counter in frosted
Born on American soil and raised under the ritual signs of Japan, the eye of
the artist, Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), illuminated the world in an extremely
original manner for the greater part of the 20th century, and continues to
exercise a tremendous influence on the concept of designed spaces in the
21st century. Sculptor and lighting designer forged in essentially hybrid territory
— in between the East and the West, space and the forms that break up
that space, function and sign/signified — Noguchi balanced out in a sublime
manner the contradictions that oriented him, to produce a life’s work that
generated new aesthetic and philosophical precepts.
Native of Los Angeles, the land of his mother, Isamu (meaning “courage”
in Japanese) followed, at the age of two, in the path of his father’s Nipponic
heritage. Later, in Paris of the 20’s, he became assistant to Constantin Brancusi,
a renowned Romanian sculptor and one of the most important names
in the modernist vanguard, an artist who broke away from naturalism and
kept in touch with Picasso, Apollinaire and Léger, being one of the forerunners
of abstract art. Still in his formative years, Noguchi completed, around
1930, an intensive training in Japanese pottery and in the Chinese techniques
of painting, two disciplines breaking with the traditional Western dichotomy
between the functionality of art and its status quo as a work of art, a break
famed for having influenced the artist in his later work.
Intercultural and half-breed by definition, Isamu Noguchi travelled the world
between the 20’s and 30’s searching for new artistic experience; among his
destinations were China, Japan, Mexico and Europe, in a veritable tour of the
modern painting and sculpture being produced at the time. “Perhaps because
of my rather alien condition, I attempt to bring sculpture into a direct involvement
with everyday life experience,” stated the artist.
During his travels, Noguchi was maturing, surrounded by references
such as sculpture, draughtsmanship, architecture and urban planning,
and even with dancing, becoming, in1935, one of the chief collaborators
of the near-mythical Martha Graham, founder and one of the greatest
exponents in the world of modern dance. On innumerable occasions,
Noguchi translated into his scenic landscapes the brilliance of Graham’s
break from the canons on the world’s stages.
Seduction by the object
It was in the 40’s, in his studio in Greenwich Village, in New York, that
Nogughi began his work as an auteur in the field of sculpture, with memorable
creations such as “Kouros”, a legitimate representative of the biomorphic
vocabulary that Isamu developed, which, then influenced by surrealism, sought
to make the human figure abstract by means of fragmented features. The
work on “Kouros” (a reference to the Greek word “man”), which launched
him into the social environment of the New York art scene, was strongly influenced
by oriental culture, with an organity typical of the art of traditional
Japanese hand-crafted production.
Committed to the aesthetic equations of three-dimensionality, Noguchi
showed himself to be extremely concerned with physical questions such as
weight, gravity and force vectors, or “engineering problems,” as he himself
used to put it. In the course of his career, Isamu Noguchi left his mark around
the world with his sculptures and projects of incontestable personality, such
as the Monument to Heroes (1943), a work of strong political tones that he
produced after his voluntary internment in an American government camp
for Japanese descendants, in an America overcome with the general fear
engendered by the war.
Experimental and intense, Isamu Noguchi became interested in the mobile
objects of New York’s galleries and then produced one of his best-known
series, the Lunars (1944), sculptures moulded in cement that housed electric
lamps, a series he himself defined as “objects that have more to do with
sidereal space than with lights.” In parallel with this, the artist also worked
on furniture designs for the famous brands Knoll and Herman Miller, who
revolutionised American interiors and those across the world.
The Akari light sculptures also demonstrated the artist’s concern with the
formas esculturais.
St. Louis, e o Lunar Voyage (Viagem Lunar), no S.S.
original specifications, which follow the hand craft process of lantern-making
— one always starts by making a wooden mould to define the overall shape
of the object. Then fine strips of bamboo are set spirally onto the mould.
After this, fine strips of Japanese paper are pasted onto the bamboo, one by
one. As soon as the paste dries and the object’s shape is fixed, the wooden
mould supporting the light is removed from the inside.
The Akari lights created by Isamu Noguchi also have little wire stands or
feet, which lends them a floating feel. During his travels in the 50’s, the artist
stated that “many works arise as the result of the work with light sculptures,
among these the Lunar Ceiling light from the American Stove Company, in
St. Louis, and the Lunar Voyage on the S.S. Argentina, all made of magnesite
with integrated electric lighting.”
“What I did in Akari was to bring an ancient art together with our modern
art, integrating it with electricity, as I had already done in Lunars. Akari
means light as illumination and also suggests light as opposed to heaviness.
The corresponding ideogram combines what is of the Sun and of the Moon.
Its quality is poetic, ephemeral and experimental. By looking more fragile
than they really are, the lights give the impression of floating. I believe that
Akari is the true development of an ancient tradition: its superficial forms
and functions can be imitated, but not its essential qualities,” Isamu Noguchi
concluded. (By Márcia Bechara)
750DS DAYLIGHTING SYSTEM
Além disso, a tecnologia
