is the case of Southern Cross Station, where the lighting contributes decisively to the
user’s ease of orientation, and of the Museo Arqueológico de Alta Montaña (MAAM),
in which the prime concern was the conservation of the exhibits.
On the other hand, we have the lighting project that enhances the subjective aspects of
light and its psychological potential, as occurs in the Rio de Janeiro restaurant, Giuseppe’s,
as well as in the Bix Jazz Club, in Stuttgart. In the planning of these environments, the
lighting was treated as an essential element in the creation of a suitable atmosphere for
pleasure to flourish, be it gastronomic or musical.
But concern with the impact of lighting on users’ behaviour is becoming ever more
widespread and now even stretches beyond such environments — where such an attitude
O PODER TRANSFORMADOR DA LUZ
Fotos | Photos: David Barbour e Sanna Fisher-Payne / BDP
qualidade do espaço urbano.
As performances/instalações aconteceram durante o Radiance Festival,
The transforming power of light After Manchester and London, in
November last year, came the turn of the city of Glasgow, in Scotland, to
be taken over by the “activists” from Guerrilla Lighting, an enterprise that
seeks to challenge people’s perception of the city and inspire new ways
of thinking, but also draws attention to the importance of lighting design
in the quality of urban environments.
Seven teams, made up of lighting professionals and architectural students,
lit up four selected locations in the city using just high-power electric
torches, LED lights and coloured filters. The result is impressive: buildings
and squares acquire a new dimension, increasing their public appeal. “If
such transformations are possible with stand-by battery-powered equipment,
just imagine what might be possible with a permanent installation?”,
provocatively challenge the project’s organisers, and with good reason.
The performances/installations took place during the Radiance Festival,
the International Lighting Festival which occurs every two years in Glasgow.
Guerrilla Lighting was recently a prize-winner at the British National Lighting
Design Awards, in the Special Projects category.
A LUZ QUE DESTACA...
E CONVIDA
Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), um centro
“escritas no ar” utilizando Dot-its (pequenas luminárias LED portáteis

In 1999, in the Argentinian province of Salta, an expedition, led by Dr.
Johan Reinhard, made one of the most important archaeological discoveries
of recent years: at the summit of the Llullaillaco Volcano, at 6,700
metres altitude, the team found three Inca children perfectly preserved in
the ice, together with a number of artefacts. The municipal government
of Salta decided to build a local museum to display these finds. Once this
decision had been made, a serious problem arose: how to display the finds
without damaging them.

The excellent state of preservation of these mummies and of the objects,
after five centuries, was due to the very special climatic conditions
of the locale: temperatures of 20ºC below zero, absence of light and low

atmospheric pressure. So, scientists and technicians, hired by the Museo

Arqueológico de Alta Montaña (MAAM) set about making showcases to
reproduce these environmental conditions.

With regard to the lighting, there was great concern in reducing the

light levels to the absolute minimum necessary to display the objects and
mummies adequately, explains the engineer, Edgardo Capiello, in charge
of the lighting project.
Thus they worked on the progressive reduction of lighting intensity
throughout the course of the museum’s successive display-rooms, which
begin with those not requiring preservation (the story of the finds), passing
through rooms of greater preservation (the artefacts), and finally reaching
the rooms of critical preservation levels (the mummies themselves). In this
way, the eye gradually adjusts to the light without high lighting levels being
necessary, Capiello elucidates.
To light the mummies, LED lights were used, as these allow for scenic
lighting with a minimum of heat being generated. Furthermore, exposure
time was minimised by a specially designed system in which the light is
activated only when the viewer pushes a button to light the mummy for
a limited length of time.
ATMOSFERA AMIGÁVEL
Iluminação abundante, com tons quentes, amplo pé-direito, materiais
e acabamentos sofisticados.
A friendly atmosphere Abundant lighting in warm tones, ample ceiling
height, sophisticated materials and finishings... The description might be
of a “loft” apartment or some fancy office, but... surprise, surprise! We are
talking here of a car-park. This innovative approach came from the pharmaceutical
firm Novartis, who came to the conclusion that the car-park is
a strategic space for the company’s corporate image, since it is there that
all the customers arriving by car get their first impression of the firm.
In the garage project of Novartis’ HQ, in Basel, Switzerland, architect
Marco Serra sought to steer clear of the typical atmosphere of car-parks
by creating a friendly atmosphere. To do this, the building’s service installations
were screened off, and the car-park was treated to finishes normally
reserved for interiors: ceiling, pillars and even the floor, for example, are
all in white. Even the generous ceiling height, of over 3m, is unusual for
an underground car-park.
In line with this approach, the lighting concept, developed by the German
offices of Licht Kunst Licht, has created a pleasing atmosphere, where
the feeling of personal safety is reinforced by even lighting leaving no deep
shadow. Instead of cold fluorescent lights, warmer lighting was used, closer
to that of incandescent lamps: the source chosen was the LED, because
of its energy efficiency.
On the outer walls, clad with textured metal panels, a suave light emanating
from the spaces between the panels and the walls bestows on these
surfaces a cadenced rhythm.
The stair-wells, for their part, are highlighted by strong lighting, emphasising
the texture of their concrete surfaces; the colder tone of this lighting
also helps to accentuate these structures and indicate that they are exits.
Inaugurado recentemente, o restaurante Giuseppe parece
número 630, o Giuseppe quebra a correria do tempo urbano, do barulho
personalidade do local.
A qualidade translúcida
posicionados no interior do restaurante, no teto, e direcionados contra
as cortinas.
The essence in the details... Giuseppe’s restaurant, recently opened,
has all the appearance of being established years ago. That chill feeling of
the new, of that which has not yet sprung to life, has been artfully eliminated
by the creation of an atmosphere evoking the warmth of the human
touch, of the passage of time, of tradition, of history.
Set in the main street of Leblon, in Rio de Janeiro, the busy Ataulfo de
Paiva Street, at number 630, Giuseppe’s stands aloof from the rush of the
urban clock, from the din of traffic and the city rat-race, making full use of
a strategic frontage before its façade. Here, all is discretion and quietude.
There is the doorway, surmounted by a discreet inscription of the name. A
shaft of light directs one’s gaze to the ground (AR-111 lamps of 65W/12V,
8º) from which surges the “g” of the logotype carved into the stone. Even
in this first little detail, one becomes aware of the importance of the role of
lighting in the conception of this project carried out by the scenographer
and decorator Jean-Pierre Tortil. Giuseppe’s lighting project was developed
by lighting designer Mônica Luz Lobo, along with her LD Studio team, and
has made a decisive contribution in defining the place’s character.
When standing in front of the restaurant’s entrance, tones of polished
bronze and brown harmonise with the touches of green of several small
trees. The translucent quality of the façade, in curtained glass, feasts the
eyes with a glimpse of the wonders within, just waiting to be unveiled, yet
without sacrificing the place’s discretion. One’s gaze precedes any bodily
motion. Even before actually stepping into Giuseppe’s, we are already
suave equilíbrio do ambiente | At the bar, decorative
details are individually picked out by the lighting,
but so as not to interfere with the delicate balance
of the overall atmosphere
incurred in passing from one environment to the other. It is at the bar that
the details constituting essence of Giuseppe’s atmosphere abound: the
myriad colours of the bottles, the scrolls of the vast hall’s woodwork, the
textures and decorations of the walls, the flooring finishes, the elegance
of the lights, chairs and crystal cabinets. Such profusion of visual information,
however, avoids the trap of stumbling into excess or tedium. On the
contrary, all the elements are harmonised into a single whole, without
losing their own individual integrity. For each specific detail, there is a
light to enhance its individuality, yet always with a view to maintaining the
compositional balance of the environment as a whole. There is, in effect, a
constant play-off between the detail and the whole, in which the lighting
plays an indispensable role.
On the bar, the bottles acquire brilliance and presence through backlighting.
In this way they are transformed into decorative items, whilst at
the same time contributing to the ambient lighting. To this end, small steps
of acrylic were constructed, lit from the inside with T5 fluorescent lamps
of 28W, 3000K, turning them into veritable light-boxes. Hovering above
the counter, huge pendant lights delimit small areas, creating an intimate,
tranquil atmosphere, which, without them, would perhaps be difficult to
achieve. According to Mônica, the intention was “to dress up the bar a
little.” The light is relatively suave and warm, and each light fitting has a
double bank of incandescent lamps (in all, eight 60W lamps). On the lower
part of the same counter, the details of the woodwork are picked out by
small lighting points (fittings for Ministar® side reflector halogen lamps
of 20W/12V), and its foot, the junction with the floor, softened by a slight
curve, is underscored by a faint light, inset into a coving in the woodwork
just above the floor (a 13mm light string).
Special care was taken with the integration of the light sources into the
woodwork and the interior details; in fact, the unique objective of these
A luz é bastante suave,
Another high point of Giuseppe’s is the monumental crystal cabinet,
located at the centre of the restaurant, which rises all the way to the ceiling,
linking the ground-floor with the mezzanine. Here we find a shift
in the colour temperature and intensity of the light, with fittings for T5
fluorescent lamps of 28W, 4000K, and the glass panels play a more active
part in the overall ambient lighting, being transformed into veritable lighting
devices themselves. Fitted at the sides into recesses in the woodwork,
flooding the glass shelves and crystal glasses with light, these lamps make
the piece resplendent with a white blaze, creating a lovely counterpoint
to the rest of the lighting, which is appreciably yellower.
The restaurant’s functional lighting is simple and discreet. Lighting the
tables, point sources using IRC dichroic lamps of 35W/12V, 36º, softened
by “honeycomb” filters, — anti-glare grilles — create little pools of light in
the interior (underneath the mezzanine), or AR-111 of 65W/12V, 8º, in the
central area. Over the bar, a number of point sources light the counter (AR-
111 lamps of 65W/12V, 24º) and others are focussed on the round tables
opposite (AR-111 lamps of 65W/12V, 8º). The overall impression is one of
somewhat fundamental lighting that impresses on us those details which,
together, go to make up the essential grace and charm of Giuseppe’s. These
are precisely the same details responsible for the restaurant’s welcoming
feeling , to which the lighting contributes so decisively.
A resposta é: Bix
The prima donna “music” in high contrast What could jazz and
Germany share in common? The answer is Bix Beiderbecke, one of the
most important North-American cornet-players of the 1920’s, who was
of German extraction. It was in his honour that a small group of jazz aficionados
in the Stuttgart region decided to start a club devoted to this
kind of music.
Located within a two-storey historic building, the Bix can accommodate
around 200 guests, and is divided into two spaces of distinctly differing
surroundings: whilst the ground floor opens up into a spacious auditorium
for live jazz performances, the floor above houses a lounge offering a more
intimate atmosphere.
L+D
“A rica diversidade
designer Michele A. Rami. Luzes pontuais (lâmpadas AR-111) destacam as
aproveitando o pé-direito duplo.
On the ground floor, the “jazz forum” is separated off by a panel of
twisted strips of copper-coloured anodised aluminium which surrounds the
stage and audience. This panel is lit by a compact aluminium track with
Xenon lamps and a parabolic reflector, and also accentuated by concentrated
beams at selected points (AR-111 lamps) so that varying dynamic
reflections are created in the room. “The rich diversity of jazz finds expression
here in a figurative fashion”, explains architect Giorgio Bottega, with
regard to the light-play on the panels. At the same time, the panels also
fulfil an acoustic function, as if they were a kind of gauze covering the
rear wall. The ceiling lining, which is dark, totally in keeping with jazz club
tradition, is coated with an acoustic plaster, lending presence to the music
in the room without excluding the possibility of conversation.
In the high style of the North-American films of the 1930’s, the club’s
atmosphere is typified by the powerful contrast between light and dark
areas. “We sought to create an atmosphere that was typical of those jazz
clubs and so we worked with light beams coming from hidden sources,”
divulges lighting designer Michele A. Rami. Point sources (AR-111 lamps)
highlight the ground-floor tables as well as those in the lounge, and supply
rhythm, with concentrated beams, to the curtains and textile partitions.
Dichroic light fittings as well as a “line” of T5 fluorescent tubes complete
the lighting of the curtains. T5 lamps are also used in the lighting equipment
installed on the undersides of the counter-tops, setting them off. Besides
the anodised aluminium strips, the only other three-dimensional element
is located in the entrance-hall: five enormous tubes, lit with PAR-38 lamps,
hover overhead, taking advantage of the two-storey ceiling height.
e manualmente selecionáveis, possibilita criar diferentes atmosferas luminosas
grande estrela é a música.
An easily adjustable lighting control, with manually selectable and programmed
lighting plans, makes it possible to create different lighting atmospheres
according to functional requirements or the mood of the club.
With regard to the colours, the designers went for earthy colours — whiskey
and cognac — warm, but not too dark. The brass-coloured elements were
brought in as an analogy to the jazz instruments, such as the saxophone and
trumpet. Throughout, there are only four colours, which imparts a unified
atmosphere to the club. However, due to the differing reflective properties
of the materials used, as for example, wood, anodised aluminium and
textiles, the perceived colour spectrum is greatly amplified.
Working with perceptual hierarchies was an important part of the project’s
master-plan, as well, no doubt, as one of the main reasons for its success.
“We did not want to play with many ornaments or different colours. Each
room gets one eye-catcher at most, one “hero” that ought to be a strong
gesture,” explains architect Henning Erhardt. And his colleague, Giorgio
Bottega, sums it up to perfection: “We try to create spaces that always
stay quiet.” What could be more appropriate for a jazz club, where the
leading star is the music itself?
dentre eles a paulistana Esther Stiller.
o Franco + Fortes Lighting Design.
projetos, dentre casas, lojas, aeroportos, monumentos, exposições, centros
Dominion of the imprecise The text on facing page, written by architect
Carlos Fortes, for a showroom for light fittings in São Paulo, and neatly
sums up the essence of this partnership’s work: dominion of the imprecise,
of light and shadow in architecture.
When Gilberto Franco and Carlos Fortes first started working together,
the Brazilian market for architectural lighting was just taking its first steps.
This was happening thanks to the pioneering efforts of a handful of lighting
designers, prominent amongst whom was Esther Stiller from São Paulo. It
was in her firm that these two architects first started their collaborative career
— having become, moreover, Stiller’s partners. This was only until such opportune
moment arose when the pair’s aspirations and ambitions merged
and they formed their own firm, Franco + Fortes Lighting Design.
That was eleven years ago, and the partners soon established themselves
as one of the most important points of reference in Brazilian lighting design,
with a widely varying range of projects. Among these figure homes,
shops, airports, monuments, exhibitions, commercial centres and public
buildings, that together constitute an extensive portfolio of the firm which
has, so far, developed over a thousand projects.
To this long list of works should be added a noteworthy comment: the
pair’s stance in relation to the profession of lighting designers, which,
edição do prêmio da IALD (International Association of Lighting Designers),
bastante apegados”, destaca Franco. Tamanha afinidade permitiu inclusive
mostra, citado no início desta matéria.
though recognised, is not yet regulated in Brazil. It was precisely at Franco
+ Fortes that the first meeting was held for the creation of the Associação
Brasileira de Arquitetos de Iluminação (AsBAI — the Brazilian Lighting Architects’
Association), officially founded in 1999, with the aim of reinforcing
the profession by highlighting the importance of lighting projects in
architecture, as well as by promoting standards of excellence in the execution
of such projects. Last year, it is worth mentioning, Gilberto Franco was
president of the AsBAI, and this year, after the firm’s success in the 24th
IALD (International Association of Lighting Designers) awards with their
project for the Museu da Língua Portuguesa (Museum of the Portuguese
Language) established at the Luz Train Station in São Paulo, Franco was
elected a member of the IALD directors’ board. This demonstrates a clear
recognition of the quality of the work achieved by these two designers.
THE ESSENCE
The extensive and varied portfolio of projects by Gilberto Franco and Carlos
Fortes is the result of a perfect combination of the differing talents of each
one. Franco devotes himself principally to understanding and interpreting
light as a building material, with all its characteristics, potentialities and
limitations. “Now Carlos has always been methodical,” he says, referring
to his colleague’s facility, often on the basis of very scanty information, in
grasping the essence of the architecture and, consequently, of the appropriate
lighting project. These twin characteristics of ours work together so
that we can quickly come up with what we call our “departure point” for
the lighting project — a concept, by the way, to which we have become
iluminar a exposição”, lembra Fortes.
A dialogue of differences: varying types of projects, distinctive features of
the two architects... Yet a distinct line, a unifying principle, runs through the
thought patterns of both and finds itself reflected in their lighting projects:
it is that of quality — conquered, for its part, by means of an unpretentious
manner of looking at each working proposal that comes their way.
Beyond just coming up with brilliant solutions or technology, “the most
important thing is understanding a project’s lighting needs,” says Fortes.
The rest, that is to say, its execution proper, simply follows on as a result
of this initial approach. And it results “in a response to the project that
is the translation of the architectural design into the language of light,”
asserts Franco. This methodology reaffirms the vocation of these lighting
designers to create projects in line with international trends in lighting and
sustainability, without, however, neglecting to incorporate in their projects
those self-same concepts developed in the course of nearly two decades
of professional activity.
The jobs that most attract them? Those that offer the greatest challenges.
One example is lighting the works of Renoir for the MASP exhibition, in
São Paulo, in 2002. Subjected to severe constraints, such as the technical
standards for the control of ultra-violet radiation (described in detail by
European technicians), they doggedly sought out the ideal lighting set-up
for each work. And all this bound up with a tight budget. “With all these
difficulties, we still managed to work taking into consideration the essence
of what was needed to light the works,” recalls Fortes.
Franco + Fortes Lighting Design.
ing, but, rather, the marvellous paintings of this impressionist artist. This is
as it should be: in architecture, in scenic design, in an art exhibition, what
one takes in is the work itself, the object, and only rarely the lighting that
reveals it. The intelligent manipulation of this secret sympathy between
light and shadow (“Lightshadow”), the translation of the visible, so rendering
the world around us perceptible, is precisely what sums up the work
of Franco + Fortes Lighting Design.
Prominent among the current projects of Franco + Fortes Lighting
Design are: Victor Cívita Square, a partnership between the
publishers Editora Abril and São Paulo City Council, to be located
on the contaminated site of an old refuse incinerator and destined
to house the Open Museum of Sustainability; plastic artist Adriana
Varejão’s pavilion at the Inhotim Contemporary Arts Centre, in Minas
Gerais; the Belenzinho unit of SESC São Paulo; and the Nações
Unidas Business Centre Tower IV and E-Business Park, both also
in São Paulo’s capital city, and conforming to LEED international
certification recommendations.
HANGING NEST E FLOATING NEST
Dominici
These threads from the “heart” of the rattan are then wound randomly to
create diffusing shades looking like birds’ nests. In this way, the handmade
shades delicately emphasise the qualities of the exotic, natural and renewable
materials used.
VEGA 95
Almeco
A tecnologia PVD (“Physical Vapour Deposition”) aplicada no Vega
95 permite a obtenção de ótimos valores de reflexão total, superiores
a 95% (DIN 5036-3 Esfera Integradora de Ulbricht) – 13% acima do
luz solar e sistemas daylight.
grande flexibilidade (30º no eixo vertical e 360º no eixo horizontal)
SILVER & BLACK
Ledpoint
The lights in the Silver & Black line use 3W LEDs and are made out of machined
aluminium using CNC technology, giving the product high dimensional
precision and quality of finish.
The lights’ surface is treated with micro-texturing and anodising in the
colours black and matt black, while their articulations, their “cores” are in
natural polished anodised aluminium.
They have a beam adjustment system offering the user great flexibility (30º
on the vertical axis and 360º on the horizontal) even on the square-faced
models — only the core moves.
The lights in this line are also flexible with regard to the beam angle and
colour temperature. Angles of 6º, 10º, 25º and 40º as well as temperatures
of 3,000ºK and 5,000ºK are possible.
The Multiplus Quattro model (four adjustable beams of 3W each) allows
one to have in the same light two different apertures of beams and colour
temperatures.
An important point in the design of this equipment is the LED’s heat dissipation
system: exclusive thermal heat-sink shells help prolong the diodes’
working-life.
Vega 95 is a type of aluminium of high reflectivity and advanced technology,
produced by the Italian firm ALMECO S.p.A.
An anodised base is covered with a layer of high-reflectance 99.99% pure
aluminium and an external double layer of oxide that is vacuum deposited
and modified for maximum gain in reflectivity.
